Fuel leak from under the engine??

I recently started noticing fuel leaking out from underneath my engine compartment. I have a 99 f250 with about 170,000 miles on it. If you have any related problems please share them with me.

I am assuming it is diesel ... Take off the plastic cover that is over the engine (where it says "7.3L"). you will see your fuel filter housing under there (round can about the size of an oil filter) on the back side of that there is a drain valve with a hose connected to it, look down past that and see if there is diesel puddled on top of your engine. If there is, then the seal went and you can make a new seal out of some gasket material or just buy a new drain valve. It is attached with 4 small torx screws. If it is leaking out of a tube in front of the engine block then the seal is broken internally in the drain block and the whole block has to be replaced.

Check the drain valve behind the fuel bowl. There are two O rings that wear out and need to be replaced. Fuel usually drains from there and runs down the block when the galley gets full. Takes a torx bit to remove 4 screws. I forgot the size but maybe someone will chime in. You can replace the entire assembly but a couple bucks for the O rings will fix the problem.

Like JFH said they are actually o-rings and they usually dissintegrate so you may not see any sign of them when you take it off. for some reason I kept calling it a seal but they are actually o-rings. Instead of using o-rings I made a gasket out of some rubber gasket material that can be in contact with gas and diesel so maybe it will last a little longer, if not it is easy enough to fix.

Thats exactly what i have found, i was looking just for this answer, but i have some questions. I have noticed a little fuel there but couldnt see where it was comming from and i had a slight smell when i stopped at lights.

The other night after i filled up i noticed a puddle under the trucka few hours later when i went to pick up my trailer. I think it was water, because it was clean, dripping out of the tube but it did have a slight fuel smell. After the race that weekend i changed the fuel filter and the smell i had went away.
Well a few days later the smell is back and stronger and it has more fuel
there and i have been trying to find out why.

Here is where i have my questions, i changed my oil today, and i have the cover off of my filter. I am going to the atuo parts place tomorrow for a part for my car, can i get the o-rings at the standard auto parts stores? Next, you say if its leaking out of the front, you need to replace the drain block and the whole block, your not talking about the engine block right? seems like there would be a more efficent way to fix that. Hope it dosent sound like too crazy of a question, but the truck is running way too good.

Oh yea, sorry to the OP, dont mean to hijack your thread.

I believe the O rings are 1/8" thickness, 1/4" ID x 1/2" OD. I ended up buying a pack of 10 for $4.90 but NAPA does carry them. They were out when I went so I just ordered them online and put them in a couple days later. Heck, if you PM me I can probably mail you a couple.

1/8" thickness, 1/4" ID x 1/2" OD

Here are the instructions. This place sells the "O ring kit"

Ok , I didnt make it to NAPA or any other parts place yesterday to try and dind the parts. I had to run to Tuscaloosa today to pick up some things from my finceas mother. While in town i stopped by Advance and Orileys and they couldnt find anything. Well a few mins ago on the way back i noticed smoke coming out the back. The tube up front was pouring the fuel out. I was able to nurse the truck back and im now about to start tearing into it.

oh what block do i need to replace, the drain block? Does it have another name or a part number? Can it be gotten at NAPA or another auto parts store or is it just a Ford only part?

Mine appears to be leaking just around a hose just under the water drain behind the fuel filter. Is this the drain valve you are talking about. Mine has 4 phillips head screws that attach it to the fuel filter housing.

O rings & treatment

First ...thanks for all the advice in the FTE forum...........changed just the o rings on the drain..the dealership saying they are being told by FORD to sell the treatment to put the sulfer back in the fuel....I certainly hope the injectors are not affected by the " new and improved " fuel being forced on us..
thanks again guys for all the help. and to puredieselpower.com

They shouldn't be phillips head screws holding the drain valve on, should be 4 torx head size 15.
