This is probably a dumb question but the 7.3L has been shoe-horned into the F-Series engine bas so I can't really see much. As far as I know all waterpumps have a weep-hole to let coolant that makes it past the seal out of the bearing area. Well I've got a pretty good leak going and it's been going for a while now.. like weeks. It's coming down the drivers side of the pump - about an inch or two right of where the pump shaft would be. My experience has been that once the seal goes out the bearings aren't far behind. This has been going on for quite a while now... weeks - and still no bearing noise. It's getting hard to ignore at this point.
The problem is I can't see a hole on the pump and I certainly can't see where the water is coming from - It disappears up behind the pulley. It seems like it would be droping down onto the pulley and making a big mess not making an orderly stream down the pump and onto the block. Thought I'd ask if this sounded familiar to anyone.
Can you wiggle the fan blade around? My 96 was leaking, and when I checked the fan it was real loose. I thought the hole was directly under the shaft. I could be wrong. If you have to change it you need a few special tools to get it off, but not for the install. One holds the pulley, and a big thin wrench to get the nut off. If the fan is not loose, make sure you see the leak. Maybe it is something else.
yes its your water pump. the weep hole has a small reservior there so the coolant overflows that and then runs down the casting of the pump. it is very difficult to see even with a mirror. I don't wait for them to make noise cause chances are you won't hear it over the engine. if its leaking i would replace it asap
my 97 did something similar to that the other day and it turned out to be my thermostat neck. Try running your truck till you are sure it is hot and then shut it off and squeze your top radiator hose( to increase pressure) while looking and listening for water/ air escaping. That was the only way I could see my leak. hope it helps cowboy. Desy
Yeah it does kind of look like I have I have a leak at my water-neck. It doesn't look like enough water is coming out of there to account for this drip... I'll have to check it out more.
