When you open the door, apparently the handle turns and pushes this long rod to disengage the latch. This no longer happens. You turn the handle, the rod moves, but the door doesnt open. HELP!!
I can't see into the door far enough to tell whats going on. there are no access panels in the sheetmetal. I guess this type of thing is fixed when the door is open and you can get to the latch. I can't. I don't know what to do. My handy dandy Haynes manual is horribly vague.
Thanks-
Yes this does help!! Its so small though, its hard to read. how does the rod connect to the latch?
-Also, does anybody have any way to fix this or at least open the door? The door is closed and almost impossible to work on. I had a very hard time just getting the panel off.

I cut a hole on the inner pannel, usually the rod needs adjustment, it's a pain but you need to take the interior pannels off, then imagine you had a hole in the door metal work on hte inside, the rod needs to be pulled towards the insode of the van, then hte lever will work correctly. what has probably happened is hte actuiating rod has bowed, usually outwards hence the pulling towards the inside of the vat, this is actuallty to straighted it, also if bowed it does not sit on the latch correctly, pulling towards the insode also helps this. you have a clip on the handle side (you still need the inner pannels off) that you can release and pull on that to try and get to work however I would try and straighten the rod aswell. I cut the hole because I didn't inderstand why when I heard it moving the latch it wouldn't open (it was one of the best things I ever did)
It worked!!! Thank you thank you!!! Funny thing is now that I have it open I amm afraid to close it. I don't have the right star drive to remove the latch!!
HA!
On my '91 the rod moved fine but did not move the latch. I cut a 2" x 3" opening toward the rear of the door opposite the rod. I found that the rod attached to a stamped steel lever that worked the latch. Even though the rod was properly located in the center plastic guide, the lever flexed outward. So, the rod moved, but the latch didn't. I used a slim pry bar through the hole I had cut, and bent the lever in, and then it worked.
Once the door is open lube the moving parts..

Use white lithium grease to lube. You may want to use WD-40 to initially lube and work any grip an build up out, basically use WD-40 as a solvent. Once it is working properly, use the white lithium grease. The kind that comes in a tube will work better and last longer than the spray.
