I have a 2005 6L with ~12K miles...bought the Superchips Tuner and have been running it on Economy since this summer. Mileage improved a bit and truck felt better. I have been seeing lots of guys make mention about some of the horror stories with these and damage to some engines...got me concerned.
I rarely tow...mostly just drive to and from work each day. When I do tow...it is usually just 1-2 ATVs...less than 2K.
Should I be concerned and get rid of the tuner or am I overreacting???
man you are fine with econ mode ,the reason people have trouble is when they exceed 30 psi, then the head bolts begin to stretch and you blow your headgasket .
the superchips is tuned very safe but you could still get high e g t 's so get an e g t probe and you'l be fine .
exhaust gas temp.; let's you know if your girl is working too hard or not. You might get away with not having it if you keep your program in the tow setting, but if your going to bump it up, I would get one(I would get one anyway, but thats just me)
I would also suggest a better Turbo Boost Gauge. I know my factory gauge show 30-35 when towing the 5ther up some of our mountain passes. That's in Tow/Safe. As for the EGT it measure your exhaust gas temperature as mentioned. Most are installed pre turbo. Magical number is arount 1200-1250. The goal here is NOT to melt/fry the turbo. Spendy to fix and if they know you have a mod its out of your pocket. It winter now so not too much heavy towing. Before summer I am going to install the 3-Pod dash with white gauges to match my truck. The 5ther is tucked away for the season.
There are various gauges out there. Digital are nice since those model can be programed with an alarm to a preset value. You can now get the standard gauges that can be mounted in various locations. A Pillar, dash mount, ect. Do some research, call your local diesel tech and get a quote for install. Check out some of the vendors on FTE to compare.
does the EGT probe prevent any damage or just tell me what the temps are?
What good does this probe do me????
Thanks for the patience guys...kinda bought the 6L w/o the need but just thought I had to have a diesel. Fords were the biggest and I liked the roomy interior.
Maybe I should just set it back to factory and not worry about it...
Jdogg egt probe will and will not prevent damage. It WILL prevent damage if you pay close attention to it and do not exceed safe limits. It WILL NOT prevent damage in the sense that it will not automatically back power down to prevent damage. Basically the temps are what make the difference between go and blow.
Actually if you get a digital monitor and if the tuner has the software design, the monitor will backdown on the power until your temps go below whatever you set them at(the default on mine is 1250, but i have it set at 1000).
Ditto on what tex25025 stated on certain digital ones but they do cost more. The standard ones you will have to keep an eye on it and when it gets to the "Desired" temp ease off the throttle.
anyone running a superchips 1704A on economy setting on a 6L and getting high temps?
Man...I am no expert and when I bought one, Vic Ferrari replied on this site that for what I explained I wanted, the 1704A was fine and never made mention to the possible high exhaust temps...I just wanted something SIMPLE that would possibly improve my gas mileage....dang.
