Hi guys,
I am new here, and I have a weird problem. I own a Tioga Fleetwood motorhome from 2000 on a Ford E-450 Super Duty chassis. Last trip I drove, I had no problems at all with the gear, but when I arrived at campsite, I drove it onto the choks to level the RV and switched the engine off after putting the gear in Park. I then started the engine again, but could not get into gear at all... Impossible!!! I tried everything... I found only one solution: click the key a few milimiter backwards (towards me) as I disengage the gear lever from Park to Drive. It works, and once out of Park, it is no problem to change gear again... untill I put it to Park again... The stearing got blocket a week before for a few minutes untill I managed to "force" it out... Could the key lock be out of line? Does anyone have a clue?
Thanks for your help.
Karyne.
Check the cruise control switch at the end of the master cylinder. It'll leak brake fluid down into the cruise control switch, and short it out. There is a recall on this switch.
Thanks Munkey, I've checked your post and it seems my answer must be there somewhere... But I'm only a chick, so i'll try my best to sort it and will keep you informed about the result...

Well, I am ever so thankful... It woooorrkkkddd!!! Here is how:
After reading your post, Munkey, that peanut inside my head worked at night, and this morning, bingo! I disconnect the battery and could change gear freely. I reconnect the battery and it is blocked again... So as you said, electrical problem for sure, so I go on all 4s to try to get to the fuse box under the dash and check for continuity in each fuse, and there was the little broken *******: a 15 Amp fuse! I changed it, reconnect my battery, start the engine and... Bingo... gear box is freed again...
Many thanks again.
Karyne.
heres another hint for you. before you put the lever in park and while you still have your foot on the brake set your parking brake to hold the vehicle, then shift into park. by doing this the vehicles weight is on the brakes. not on the small parking gear lever inside the transmission that can bind up. and make you think the lever is locked up. another is as munkey said. check your stop lights. if they are out do as you did check the fuses first. if they still are out the stop switch is bad. all of these things can make it hard to get out of park if not impossible.
Many thanks Level10, I think you are wright. A friend told me about the brake thing... after I had the trouble. Just one little thing to try with care when someone gets caught in Park and cant get out of it: with the motor on (the foot on the brakes, always), try to push the key a couple of millimeters ferther (away from you and not towards you as I put in my first post) as you are getting the gear leaver into Drive with your other hand. It worked for me to get me driving until i could reach home to post you for a proper answer...
we run a transmission rebuild shop and you would be surprised at how many time times we get asked how to stop the binding. it's not just trucks it's all vehicles that do this.
