I have an 03 limited with the heated, manual telescopic tow mirrors. The passenger side was broken and i'm ready to replace it. Do u have to remove the whole door panel or can u just remove the black plastic rectangular piece above the door panel. Any tips would be appreciated!
How have to remove the door panel. On my 01, there is a screw behind the red reflector and one onder the handle - then it just slides up... Do Not Pull Out!
You have to remove the black plastic "sail" panel. Then remove several rubber plugs to access to nuts. You will have to remove the door panel to get to the "plug" for the mirror/heat.
To remove the door panel; pull the black interior "sail" panel opposite the mirror attachment point ... pull directly away from the door; pry up the forward edge of the window switch panel ... once loose, disconnect the wiring harness connections (this exposes one screw that holds the door panel in place); gently pry off the red reflector (this exposes the other screw); LIFT the door panel upwards -- DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PULL IT AWAY FROM THE DOOR STRUCTURE; as it eases free, you will need to unplug the warning light-socket that was located behind the reflector. Installation is accomplished by reversing the sequence stated above.
Hopefully, I haven't forgotten anything ... been a few years since I had one off. If someone noticed that I did miss something, please chime in.

I forgot to say that once those two screws are exposed, remove them before trying to lift the panel upwards. That may have been obvious to many, but not to others.
I have been thinking of replacing the mirrors on my '01 x with the ones with the turn signals.. Is this possible with out a lot of work?? Is there a wired plug for this??Is this an option for the '01??

The lighted tow mirrors was first an option in 2003 MY I think. There should be a plug you can buy that will work if you don't already have the turn signal mirrors.
Replacing the mirrors is easier than changing motor oil.
Thinking about adding the turn signal mirrors on the dually but at $500 a set from Ford or on Ebay it's not time.
If you still do want to put on the new mirrors, the connector is easiest acessed by removing the speaker from the doors (after the door panel is off o course). The connector(s) (i have a 2000, so i have one for power move and one for heat) are slightly above and forward of the speaker opening) Be careful, the plastic connectors can get kind of fragile after a couple of years. If your truck didn't come withe the turn signal option, you will probably have to run new wires for that function throught the door and up into the dash and tap the appropriate wire, but that is just a guess because i didn't have the extra cash to fork up for the lighted ones when I upgraded.
If you don't care about the lights, you can get a set for about $220 from partstrain.com I bought a set, and have been pleased. Whatever you decide, good luck!
