Excursion Which engine.

I currently have a 2003 limited Ex with a 6.0, 115k miles on the clock. I have been having some trouble with it of late and I would like to get another Ex. I just am not sure wich power plant to go with next I am leery of the 6.0 now so thinking of getting a 03 or 02 with the 7.3, or maybe go the V10 route, any opinions.

Thanks
Sheldon

Im very partial to the V10, I have two of them. I am very leary of the 6.0L also and of the 7.3L for that matter. The diesels at work are always breaking down. We have a new 2006 6.0L that has 4,500 miles on it and it just used 6 quarts of oil. Something aint right.

I take it you work with the ambulance's using the ford SD frame. Alot of medics I see at work have had varied opinions about them so far, but all don't care the early 6.0 PSD. I just can't really make my mind up yet.

The 7.3 PSD is bulletproof. Buy one.

Go with the 7.3, tried and true workhorse, I have 85k on ours, my cousin had 135k of HARD miles on his before his dad totalled it, he already has a guy wanting the engine. I was never impressed with the 6.0,,, way to many problems if you get a bad one.

Well I am not impressed by the 6.0 at all. My grandfather has 2 7.3's on the road and they have given him very few problems. Unfortunatly the Green Ex is gone. I am now looking at black 03 with a 7.3, only problem it is on the other side of the US.

Talking ???????

I have a 6.0 and a 7.3. They both have there qwerks but I would never buy a V-10 again. The biggest problem with either diesel is idle time. That could be the problem in the ambulance. I just had the EGR cooler fail in the 6.0 under warranty. The dealer said to cut idle time to extend the life of that cooler.

95K on my '01 V10 Ltd before trading in on '05 V10 EB. The ONLY problem I ever had was the IAC valve stuck briefly on one extremely cold morning (below 10-degrees F). After pumping the gas pedal a few times, it returned to normal operation. I traded because I feared the '01 tranny was going to go out on me in the near future.

18,000 on my '05 6.0 Excursion and no problems so far (knock on fake wood!). Interestingly enough, my service manager told me recently that the 6.0 seems to age better when it is driven aggressively (which I do). I had asked him about soot buildup in the intake (as a result of the EGR), when he advised me not to "baby" the engine. He said mine looked nice and clean.

We'll see how it goes as time goes by. I'm planning to keep this truck at least ten years, and purchased a 7/70,000 extended warrantly because of the teething pains I'd read previously about the 6.0 ... If I knew then what I know now, I probably would've looked for a good used 7.3, but so far I'm loving my X with the 6.0!

Regards,

Talking engine

Hey there plaincrazy, I couldn't agree with that more. My big trucks are designed to run low on the torque curve. The 7.3 I have is happy at much lower rpm's than the 6.0. I did just use warranty for a EGR cooler.

My 2000 V-10 has 87k and runs good as it did on day one. LOVE the power. Also have a 99 7.3 diesel 189k real workhorse runs beter than when new. Had to replace a water pump. Not bad for 189k, but not as much fun to drive as V-10.
