i have a 2004 f-150 with the 5.4 ltr engine...3.73 gears and 17" wheels 265/70 17 tires....this truck just averages around 13 mpg....is there something wrong with this? most people say i should get 15 to 16 mpg.....mileage has been checked several times and these are highway miles....any suggestions on how to improve mileage would be appreciated...
Not again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This topic never dies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How about a 2004-2007 gas mileage only forum Moderators???????????? You're new so I won't give you too hard of a beating, but this gets brought up on here all the time. My 04 gets about 11-13 in normal driving. My best ever highway mileage has been 16.9. Some people get much better mileage than I do. I generally drive it easy, and 13 in town/ mixed is about tops. Light foot will help, making sure tires are at proper pressure at all times will help, lowering speed to 55-60, and using cruise control every time possible on the highway. Mine does better when i use cruise on the highway and take myself out of the picture. Remember it's a 6000lb truck, and it was only rated for 16 city anyway.
There are so many variables that go into mileage, that no two trucks are exactly the same. Check out the results of this poll, to see how the numbers average out (with a pretty standard distribution, and a few extraneous outliers) https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...eage-poll.html
Ferg: This IS a discussion board. We discuss things here. Yes, many topics are rehashed, but FTE grows leaps and bounds daily. Many new, inquisitive minds wants to know what we have already covered (and having the search feature turned off temporarily for regular users isnt gonna help...). You think you are sick of gas mileage topics? How many do you think I've seen in the few years I have been here?
My 04 scab consistently gets 11.5 in town, 13.7 highway. But as you can see we are not supposed to talk about the f150 and bad mpg. Its definitely a big ford no no.

Come on ford9c.... do you have anything constructive to add, to any of these threads? Its nothing but constant Ford bashing, and it gets old. If Ford has made you such a bitter customer, why not move on? Clearly you are in the minority here.
My truck with the same power train will get about the epa rating of 14/18 in the summer with gentle driving but it drops this time of year due to colder weather and the different gasoline blend. In the winter I get around 13 or just a little bit less. My friends with similar vehicles of different brands get the same and often worse than I do. I've driven trucks for 40 years and this one does better than any of the V8 automatic trucks I have had. I've had 3 or 4 "wheelbarrow" (that is the capacity) trucks that have done better.
My apologies WheelMA1. I saw your comment about this being a discussion board and got carried away. As far as dumping the ford goes, I already tried that last summer, there were no takers. It looks like I might be stuck with it for awhile.
WheelMA1, I was just joking around and hoped that the excessive punctuation would express that. I guess it didn't. Thats what it mean though. All caps would be pissed. I did offer some suggestions for better mileage, so I did discuss the topic, and try to help with the concern. I also see that someone deleted the troll's post and my rebuttal to it. I don't think that mine needed to go, but it would have made no sense without the other one. I just didn't like the fact that some troll decided to jump on here and be cruel and chase someone (a new member especially) from the site. That just not the foot to start out on, and he makes us all look bad. Now back to topic.
