Hey Folks, I'm new to this site and feel blessed to have found it. There seems to be a wealth of info here and hopefully I can add to it. I have a '99 4.0 4x4 Ranger w/ 170k. The check eng. lt. is on and the codes that I got are po171& and po174. Are there any common reasons for these that I can look at? The causes that I have looked into seem to point to everything from vaccuum leaks to o2 sensors. I would just like to get some opinions on the most likely places to look before I start digging. I am grateful for any help.
Seeing as how both banks are indicating lean, a vacuum leak should probably be high on your suspect list, maybe even a clogged fuel filter, if it hasn't been changed lately.
You could rig a propane sniffer leak check tool, with a length of tubing, with a sports needle on one end as a probe & inspect around the intake manafold gaskets, as they are prone to leak, from loose fastners, on the 4.0L of your vintage.
If you find a leak & the gasket hasn't sucked in, you might try retorquing the fastners in sequence, maybe you'll get lucky & reseal it.
Might also look to a faulty PCV hose or connection in the valve cover.
I suppose a real dirty MAF sensor might be slow enough to mess with fuel trim also, but you've not complained about other driveability problems, so I kinda doubt that one.
Just some thoughts to ponder.
