I have removed the clutch and pressure plate from my 55 F-100. I would like to replace it and was wondering what dictates replacing the clutch AND do you have to replace the pressure plate also? It doesn't look like there is anything wrong with it. What dictates replacing the pressure plate also? ( I have never done a clutch on anything, so I need a lesson in Clutch 101). Thanks
The standard wisdom says to replace both pressure plate & clutch plate along with throw out brng. I have replaced just the clutch plate so long as the clutch was not slipping.

I agree with replacing the pressure plate along with the throw out bearing, also now would be a good time to check the condition of the front transmission seal. If it hasn't been replaced in a while, it want get any cheaper or eaiser than now.
well you are in for a treat of a job.
first off you will have to check the condition of your flywheel, look at it closly and see if you can see blue spots on it.
these spots indicate that the clutch and pressure plate got over heated at one time or another.if they have cracks around them bad news pressure plate is done.
blue spots are not to bad but a machinest can not turn it down cause the blue spots are very hard.
so if you don,t have any cuts or gouges in the face you can reuse it
throw out bearing I would replace.
you should look at your crank bushing as well.
need a clutch alinement tool to line up your friction plate as well
oh ya the friction plate does have a clutch side (it is stamped on it) hope that helps
