Hello, I found this site through Google. This is my first post.
I need help.
I have a 96 Ford F-150 Eddie Bauer 5 speed stick. Short bed
I heard an explosion from the rear and later heard metal crunching sounds.
I took the cover off the rear and there was only about 3/4 qt of fluid. I don't really know what I expected to do after I got the cover off. I am somewhat mechanical, but never worked on a rear(except my old lady's) before.
I want to go to the junk yard and get a new one.
I have the tag off the rear pumpkin.
How should I go about asking the junk dealers for a rear end? Do I have to get the same one? Can it be different and still work? I use the truck to go to my ATV races all over FL
Any help would be appreciated,
Brian
Sounds like your spider gears went. I assume you found metal pieces inside the pumpkin? Going to a salvage yard is pretty easy. Just tell them what you need (differential assembly for a 96 Ford 1/2 ton with the gear ratio stamped on your tag) and they will track one down for you.
remember the new alxw will come with the brake drums and shoes. consider that also. you might wan tto convert yours over, or buy new shoes and start again. little more work on the outboard end might be in order. also drain the new axle, might want to do that at the scrap yard. inspect the internals while open. if you have a 4 x 4 you need to be exact same ratio. if just a 2 x 4 then you can vary a little bit
I've had very good results from JunkYardDog.com when getting axles. Most places will sell you the axle with a limited warranty and all the brake, cables, drums complete.
It is worth making them take off the cover and you inpect the ring and pinion, carrier, bearings, and spidergears before purchsing it.
Nice little B, Mud. If its yours, you got something to save for the future. Looks to be about a 1939 model B, rare weights, hand crank. Never will have a starter or alternator problem on that tractor. The rear wheel weights i am not familar with, if they are factory. The rear fenders are very rare as they came off a steel wheel tractor... Nice little unit.
