i went with the 4.0 ohv, which is what i have, 160 hp is plenty for this chasis and is still fuel-effeceint to drive every day. my second chice would be the 2.3, had one in a '88 s/c 2wd and it was a reliable, effeicent machine, just didnt have enough squirrels under the hood when faced with steep, long grades or trailers over 1,000 pnds. both trucks with the M5OD manual. my first ranger went 203,000 and was still going good when i traded for a bigger truck, and my current just turned over 100,000 and is as good as it ever was.
I going with my 3.0 it's a hoss. I pull my boat with it no problem. i've driven cross country from Alabama to california and cali to bama almost 10 times now. never had a problem with the engine. yes sensors and an oil pan gasket have given me troubles but the little engine always gives me what i need. i've got about 110,000 on my 2001 and i plan on having it for at least another 100 k. it has get up and go it has power to pull my 1700 lbs boat and trailer combo heck it's even easy to get to everything on it. hands down best motor by far. Oh i went from my 77 chevy PU with 356 Hp close to 400 ft Lbs torque to my ranger now that's a power loss but the ranger does everything my chevy did except get 7 mpg maybe 10 if i was lucky. I'm a closet chevy man but if it were between my ranger and a new chevy i gotta go with my 3.0L ranger hands down.
I think the 2.3 duratec is a very good engine, if they would put it into a 4x4, I would concider it for a DD, but I wouldn't give up my 4.0 cammer for it.
here at the office we have
1- 4.0l sohc auto
1- 4.0l ohv auto
1- 3.0l auto
1- 3.0l 5spd
2- 2.5l auto
3- 2.5l 5spd
2- 2.3l 5spd
1- 4.2l auto(full size)
1- 4.2l 5spd(full size)
the 3.0l have more power than the 4.0l and easier to work on but one of our 2.3l with NO options have alot of zip enough to where if you play with the throtle just right you can get the front tires off the ground and impress the hell out of the constuction works. 1 of our 4.2l in a shorty f-150 has just shy of 300k miles on it and it has never been opened (its due for a timing chain)
the 2.5l have to be 5spd only the auto won't get out of there own way
the only mods i'm allowed is KandN drop filters, so my money is on the 3.0l
Do they allow you to smoke crack at your office as well, cause if you think the 3.0 has more power than the 4.0, you all must be on something. Another name for the 3.0 a round here is the 3slow. I think you need to go test them again, sober this time ha ha.
