I would just worry about getting a good hi-flow system built, and not worry about scavenging, bacpressure and all the other exhuast fine tuning aspects. Your engine if far from a race engine, where these types of tuning would be more relevant.

Over the years between mustang boards, bronco boards, mazda mx6 boards, and the FTE boards Ive paid attention to the topics I mentioned and have concluded that unless you got some race-built engine, the benefits are minimal.
Now of course the same rules still apply to headers where long tubes help your low end, shorties help top end. Pipe size isnt something to go crazy about, on a moderate engine I would personally always side on the larger pipe due to the fact it will flow more, and when compared to stock more is ALWAYS better.

what about that whole flow versus velocity thing?

what if i went with a set of gibson headers and a swept side exhaust?

it would sound good and give you better throttle response than stock I would think, plus net you a couple more ponies and ft/lbs. No "upgrade" is going to decrease performance under stock levels, ie: better flowing muffler, headers, larger pipes etc...

I personally dont believe the velocity/scavenging argument all to much. All purpose built race engines run open headers. Monster trucks, sprint cars, many different types of 1/4 mile race cars etc...plus the more you can flow the more velocity you can build IMO.
