The drivers door mirror on my 81 F350 doesn't stay put. Its the large rectangular chrome plastic type, with the ball on the bottom. You shut the door, and you have to open the window to re-adjust the mirror. My 86 F150 has the opposite problem, you cant move it at all, or it seems like it will break off.
Anyway, any tricks to getting this mirror to stay put on its pivot?
On the mirror heads on my 1981, see my gallery, there are two screws right at the bottom of the head. If you have the same type mirrors, Tightening those up should improve things. The screws is what holds the head to the pivot on the frame, with a little bracket that is on the inside of the mirror head.
You can also remove the mirror from the head by slowly pulling on the rubber gasket around the mirror. That way you can get a look into the head, and see the potential problem. It may be the bracket inside that holds the head to the pivot on the frame is bent, and a little work with a hammer could fix it right up.
P.S. The 6x9 low mount swing lock mirror heads on the 1980 and 1981 are of a slightly different design, than it's newer counterparts, both cosmeticly and how they are put together. The mirror is not glued into the mirror heads on the 1980 and 1981 version, with the "triangularish" head, and are just held on by the rubber gasket.
The 1982 up mirrors, that have a "roundish" head, If I Recall correctly, have to have glue to hold the mirror in place. The head is also held to the frame differently as well if I recal correctly.
They are the same on my 81 and 86. The 86 has original mirrors, so I suspect someone upgraded the 81 at some point. Looks like I'll have to replace that one that keeps flopping. I might just have a spare in my garage, have to have a look.
