Its not usually necessary, and I'm not real familiar with your transmission, but for most gear boxes there is a drain plug and a fill plug. Take out both, replace the drain plug, and fill to the bottom of the fill plug, before replacing that one. If the fluid is warm and 'stirred', you'll get more of the fluid and any contaminants out.
Can someone guide me on how to change the tranny fluid on my 4.2 manual trans and refill? What are the steps? Thanks.
Your trans. uses Mercon atf which is fine if you change it often or don't tow. I have been using Royal Purple syncro max and it seems to hold up better based on shift quality. Take out drain plug and fill plug, clean off the magnet. You can buy a hose that will attach to the bottle and make it easy to fill the trans. I change mine each spring as cost is not much and I know the trans will give me good service.
As with the other excellent posts above, I've found using a simple siphon hose/pump, easily removes 90% of the old fluid. Drive the truck a mile or two, just to warm the manual trans fluid, it doesn't need to be "hot".
There is a drain plug and a fill plug, maybe 4" above and to the right, I beleive (slightly) to the drain. After you get the old fluid out, tighten the lower drain plug. Then add the correct manual fluid, or RED LINE and Royal Purple both make excellent fluids. As soon as the fluid is level with the fill plug, you're done.
Always clean off the drain plugs, and area you are working on. I like to put a dab of anti-seize on the threads. It makes your next fluid change easy. Change fluid every other year regardless of mileage. Your transmission will shift easily. This is a neglected maintenance task with manual transmissions, but a task that is easy. A half hour job, and that is taking your time...
Good luck, Ed
