I have a '86 F350 previously equipped with a 460 Gasoline engine. I am in the process of installing a 6.9 diesel. Trying not to change any more than needed I just disconnected the gas engine and planned to leave the wiring in place.
However when I came to run the electric fuel pump (located in the tank) it no longer operates when the ignition key is turned to run. This suggests that the engine must be turning over in order to activate the fuel pump circuit.
Can someone with access to a circuit diagram tell me what I need to connect (or disconnect) in order to make the pump operate?
you need to change the float system in the tanks and go to an out of tank electric fuel pump. the old ones work of the starter switch. for the gas engine not a diesel engine.
you need to find one that will work off the ignition switch, and make sure it is for diesel and has the right amount of delivery pressure.
The 460 had an oil pressure switch in the fuel pump circuit to cut off the pump if the oil pressure was below ~4.5 psi. It was primarily a safety device to prevent the fuel pump from running when the motor wasn't.
