I'm wondering how many different vehicles were using the M5OD ? especially in combination with the 2.3 litre 4 cylinder. I'm looking into converting the ranger pickup to a cable type clutch set up.
Puzzled as to why you would want to do this or how you could, since the clutch's hydraulic slave cylinder is inside the transmission case on the M5OD. Guess I've heard of alot more broken clutch cables than I have blown hydraulic cylinders but that could just be me.
The trans I'm interested in is the mazda built unit in the 83/84 ranger, it does show an external slave cylinder but I'm not real sure if it's an M5OD or not, if you have to replace the slave in your 97 do you have to remove the trans and bellhousing and all that ? man that's gotta cost a fortune !
Wouldn't be an M5OD as I know it and yes, you have to drop the tranny to to get the slave cylinder out. Its why if you are ever doing the clutch, the job includes a new slave cylinder whether you need it or not.
To replace the slave you have to remove the trans when it's an M5OD, which has an integral bellhousing.
Why would you want to convert to the old way when you have the external slave cylinder anyways? It's perfectly functioning as long as you don't abuse it.
Thanks RangerPilot, basically the reason for the swap is cost, and avoiding all the bleeding hassles involved with hydraulic systems, the price difference between the clutch cable and the master/slave is $ 260.00
