You're not going to speed shift the M5OD. It ain't built for that. It's built to move a 5000 pound truck.
I'm not trying to speed shift the thing, I would however like to be able to get the tranny to go into the next gear BEFORE the truck slows down enough to need a downshift.
It's not going to be as smooth as a mustang or other car type tranny. This is a truck transmission, the ZF is even "worse".
I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a truck transmission, It shifts more like a lawnmower. My M5OD makes the AX15 in my Jeep feel like a BMW gearbox, Heck even the toploader in my 66 F100 shifted better with it's completely worn out 30yr old aftermarket shifter.
If the transmission is not shifting smoothly get it to a reputable transmission shop and have an expert diagnose the problem and the repair. They are no sports car tranny but they do shift smoothly if in good repair.
When I had the pilot bearing replaced in mine the old needle bearing had chewed up the end of the shaft so a straight replacement could not be performed. Normally I would have had to replace the input $haft. Instead the shop smoothed out the shaft with some sandpaper and fitted a plastic pilot bearing used in another vehicle application. Works great and saved a lot of bucks. At the same time I had the clutch & pressure plate replaced, flywheel resurfaced, throwout bearing, and slave cylinder replaced.
