Hey guys. I have a 1990 f150 4x4 and the axle code on the door is h9 that means its a limated slip right? I havent pulled the cover off the diff to verify yet but im sure it is the original rear so Im guessing that the clutches are worn because it doesnt seem to work very well,Im not expecting it to act like a locker or anything im just looking for a little added traction. yesterday I had to lock the hubs to get outta some wet grass cause only one tire would spin.My question is is it a big project to put new clutches in and would i have to reset every thing I dont know a whole lot bout differentials but im pretty capable with a little guidance.Im geussing that new clutches being installed wouldnt be changing anything cause its still the same carrier. So I need alittle guidance. I am going to change the rear fluid and put in the additive and I have read on here not to put in to much. I will try that in the mean time but after 100k im pretty sure the clutches are pretty worn so I would like to try and rebuild it any input would be great, thanks guys.
Yes, rebuilding it is a pretty simple job and you can just about make a locker out of it if you want. I have done several now and the my '90 still works better than factory new and it's been 6 years since I rebuilt it. Salvage a set of disks from a junkyard, or buy a rebuild kit, a bottle of friction modifier, and a pinion shaft lock bolt. Check out these threads for more info...
Thanks for the replies guys, can I get a rebuild kit from my local napa and if I want to put in an extra clutch plate do I have to go to the bone yard? Im sure with the info you guys have givin me I can definatly handle the task thanks again.
You can use one of your old frictions if you go that route. I just used the stock setup and installed the largest shims that came with the kit. Originally it had the .35 shims and I went to .45 shims. It works good now. I got my kit from a local drivetrain shop. They had genuine Ford Racing rebuild kits for half the price of the dealership. Same exact part numbers. Make sure you soak the frictions in the LS additive for about 30 min. before install.
Good luck.
Let us know if you need any more info.
