Block casting numbers
This link may be helpful in your identification, or it may be way more than you ever wanted to know about Ford 6's. ;-)
Classic Inlines - History of the Ford Inline six
Based on your description, it's probable your engine is the original 170 from your '70 Bronco. But for your sake, I surely hope the fan doesn't really go "into" the engine. LOL
Thanks n I HAVE been over to that site, emailed w/the author etc (been @ this 27 yrs). He was uncertian and refered me out ("a '68 170 OR 200"). I wuz hopin he'd pull an '80 250 outta his hat for me. I gotta ID the water pump bolts I think. Will do so this wk (brrr, cold out there w/o garage). Engine sits awfully high, carb hits hood, 2 dip sticks, VC sez 1970 170 etc - NOT orig engine). And no, it's not more than I wanna know
I guess the more I know the better it will run (very S*^tty right now), cuz got no $ for wrong moves/other's labor."Oh the fan bone's connected to the shaft bone and the shaft bones connected to the wpcover bone and the cover bones connected to the engine bone and the...."
You can date it closer by looking for the date code cast into the block, near that casting number you found. It would look something like 9D4 or 0G18 or similar, giving you the last number of the year, the month code and the day of casting. Find that and report back. We can help you more from there.
The "number of water pump bolts" being referred to is the bolts that attach the pump to the block. I'd have to go back through my research materials to find the difference on the 170 vs. 200, I don't remember it off the top of my head.

I got 11
C
E6015-A
spaced pretty much as I've done here (if it keeps the formating from the "message box I'm writing in. (Under the down tube of the ex. manifold.
"possibility of it being a very early 4 main 200"
Tell me more if U can. (170: 3? =# h2o pump bolts. 200: 7? =#h2o pump bolts.)
Ross,
I've seen the dual carbs on the aussie intake. Also pinto H/W 32/36 2 bbl on the log. I think a 'diverter needs to be put in the log, altho I don't know how you'd weld 1 in cast iron. Not sure if the holly/weber is 4 bolts (to the log) or 2 like my Carter.
The 2 dip sticks are prob cuz the PO couldn't put the car engine in w/it's oil pan (frnt D30 in the way) n kept the Bronco oil pan.
Thank you both. We're no hijackin THIS thread. I will keep going,
cf

Here's another one that says 6K22

Don't get caught up in the early 200 thing. If you read the page I linked for you earlier, it explains that. We've already determined you have a 68 or newer engine, and like I said, we've ruled out that possibility.
Also, read this page.

Thanks again.
* Yeah, the numbers are put on a little differently/in a different way, there. I'll seek them out. Are they under the head or something? I see they are not in a "dissembled area" so I should be able to find them...if knowing where to look. They were not with the 11, C
E or 6015-A (near the down tube on the exhaust).* Where are the cast in # on the head?
* I read the classic in lines page. Thanks for the referal. Have the only knowledge about this from them, ford six and (darn, I forgot the other's name). Some how you know it is NOT a 200. I thought the H2O pump bolts & freeze plugs needed counting for some 1 to ID w/o disassembly. Bronco had 200 till '73 I think.
