I have a 2002 F150 4X4 extended cab. I love my truck!!
Anyway, when I bought it years ago, I bought a nice head unit and then replaced the factory speakers. I recently put a 4 channel amp in my truck, around August.
Anyway, a month ago, I started noticing a popping sound. It was fading in and out. Now, it does it after I turn the volume up. I am used to driving with my music so loud that it hurts my ears (i know its bad for you, but I am a rocker!!!), but now I can't turn it up much at all without the extremely loud popping sound. It does it when I listen to CD's and the radio.
Also, when it does this popping, I notice that the headlights will dim each time it pops, and then return to normal.
Could you be overdriving the amp....causing clipping? If you are clipping....you could ruin your speakers. Can you try a different amp? I would check your ground too as already mentioned. But I have seen amps not even come on if the ground is bad?
What you can do is check all of your grounds in your engine compartment..I had the samething going on and all I did was make my own ground wire, well actually 3 of them..I changed the one from the battery to the chassis, the starter and I connected one from the engine to the back firewall..make sure all of you connects are good and clean and have metal to metal contact. I used 2 gauge or better grounding wire.
If your Headlights are dimming chances are you are pulling too much Current through your Amp. If like most "rockers" you strive for Max distortion & have overdriven the Mosfet's in the Amp. I used to repair a lot of Amps & be willing to bet you have a Leaky Mosfet driver stage that will eventually go to cascade failure & fill your cab with smoke as it goes. You did not mention is Amp blowing fuse occasionally & have you oversized it?
