Ride Quality

I know there are a million tire questions on here.
I love how good my 97 4x4 4.6 scab drives.
But I want it to sit higher and i want more ground clearance.
I have been thinking about 285x70R17 for the factory wheels.
The factory tire on the truck is a 265x70R17.
The new tires would be about 1 inch taller. Will my truck look much higher at all? Or should I go a little bigger?

How will my truck ride with a good all terrain tire in that size? Im not so much asking about the ride of the tire. I want to know how the suspension will like the new angles? Will the truck feel fishy with taller tires?

You wont be able to fit much larger tires than a 285 (33") without at least a leveling kit. And since you are coming from a 265 (32"), then the new, larger tires wont make your truck look much taller.

As for the ride and "angles" you speak of...There will be no difference in driveline angles. Tires dont affect that.

Here's a link to my truck with 33's on it:

I meant angles for the steering components that I don't know a whole lot about. Tierods and what not. Where they have to be at a different angle to reach the center of the wheel now. I know driveshafts won't be any different.
I hear people mention leveling kits all the time. Stupid question, but what do they do, do they lift the front to make it level with the rear or lower the rear to make it level with the front? Either way the front of my truck looks very very similar to the rear, the rear is higher though.

The new tires will also have no effect on steering components. Only a lift kit will alter the suspension and steering components.

And the leveling kits raise the front end of the truck so it is even with the rear. Usually around 2". A leveling kit WILL alter your front suspension components, and it's highly recommended to get the front end aligned after installing one. If you want to get technical about it...a leveling kit will alter the steering components (the angle of the tie rods) but nowhere near enough to change or alter the stock components.

I can't find any leveling kits for my truck. What do they do on our Torsion bar front ends any way? I like the rear higher than the front. How about a leveling kit and an add a leaf?

I also like the rear higher than the front...gives it more of a sporty look. Plus, the front end wont point to the sky when I have a load in the bed. Basically, a leveling kit on these trucks just replaces the torsion bar keys that are located back on the frame near the transfer case x-member to give the front end about 2" of lift.

And yeah, an add-a-leaf for the rear would raise the rear of the truck about 1-2 inches as well...

I added a Pro-comp steering stabilizer to my truck for my 285's, helps prolong the life of your steering components. The added width and weight will be harder on everything up front and the small amount of money involved (about $60) IMO is a good investment.

Thanks! The thing is...my truck is entirely stock except for the tires. My plans for '07 calls for some 4.56 gears in the spring and a 4" lift system sometime next fall. Mabey some new wheels if funds allow ($99/ea at Centerline)
