I need help on how to get the chrome trim onto my new windshield rubber. It is the right rubber with the groove but there doesn't seem to be a way to get the chrome to go in.
I wussed out and took it to an auto glass shop. I messed with it for about 15 minutes before deciding I would destroy the trim before I got it right. They charged me for it but they told me "no offense, but I don't think you would have gotten it in by yourself". It took them the better part of 3 hours to get it on and the windshield installed.
I have a 56 without the stainless trim, so no first-hand info here. But, I have heard that the trim locks into the rubber seal and has to be installed in the seal while it is loose. The the seal (with trim) is installed over the glass. Then the whole thing is installed in the opening.
I have installed the SS trim on my '49 three times, each time it's a pain. It helps to have helper, you really need one.
First I laid the window on a flat surface, installed the rubber around it and then inserted the trim into the grove in the rubber. I left the bottom of the trim loose and installed the window into the frame. After I had the rubber seated completely in the frame I worked the loose ends of the trim into the grove and snapped the joint cover over the seam of the two ends of trim piece. It didn't take me three hours, maybe an hour. Use a a lot of soapy water and a good strong cord.
Also, I grind the four tabs out of the windshield frame. The shop manual tells you to do this if you're installing the trim piece but I grind them off even if I'm not. They really serve no purpose, the rubber will hold the windshield either way.
