I have a 77 F150 with a 460. I have recently had a few problems with it starting. It has a brand new MSD blaster coil. Part of the time though it wont fire. And for the first time this morning, while I was driving to work it died. Most of the time it will start and run fine but occasionally it wont start. There is nothing that I do that I am aware of to make it start again it just does. My husband (yes I'm a female and I drive a big block ford) suggested it might be the distributor, but I don't want to drop a new distributor in it if it isn't necessary. The reason he drew that conclusion is because the coil is grounded through the distributor. And if it isn't properly grounded then the coil can't fire. The motor has recently been rebuilt but we didn't put a new distributor in it. Have any of you experienced this or have any suggestions as to what might be going on?

Welcome to the site and way to go (big block). I would think it is one of two things, either the mag pick up in the dist or the duraspark ignition box. you should be able to check the resistance of the mag pick up with an ohm meter and I believe most auto parts stores can check the ign. box for you for free.
When my black 77 was acting up like this it ended up being the mag pick up in the new rebuilt dist the PO (of the engine) bought from Murray's. It would only start intermittently, if and when it did start it would usually run until I shut it down and then it might not start again. Installed a used stock dist I had laying around and have had zero trouble since. -Ed
Yep it was my first truck and I've been hooked on big blocks ever since! Can the ign. box be in the truck when they check it? I think I'll swing by the parts store on my way home. I really appreciate all the input!
You'll have to have it checked when it's acting up (not starting or shuting off), not sure if they can check it in the truck. Most stores I know of have a test machine that is inside the store. -Ed
Didn't know it needed the 12 volts. Do know when all is working it will shock the crap out of you! Haven't had a chance to take it off (ign. mod) but will do so upon returnig home from the city after this weekend. I'll have to look into the by-pass circuit. Thanks! Oh and it's not the charging system.
I had a similar situation and it ended up being a broken coil wire. Somehow the wire became broke and separated inside the sheath - I would get voltage but not full voltage. Took a while to figure that one out. At least it was a cheap repair.
Don't rule out the new coil. A co-worker put new msd coil on his truck when I told him I like mine. After a few months he had same problems also sometimes it would also cut out while running. He put an old coil he had back on it and it runs fine.
