weird engine noise

weird engine noise
I have an 02 explorer,when the weather is warm the engine makes a swoooshing sound,it sounded like a slipping fan belt.It only happens when it's about to change gears.It is more cooler temp now and I can hardly hear it.Ford said that it is coming from inside the engine they will have to go in,they don't have a clue what it is.Anyone had this happen before?

I've had a lot of these with the fan pulley causing the noise... apparently a few were manufactured slightly wrong causing the belt to glaze.

Can you briefly test it with the belt off to eliminate the pulleys as the cause?

OK I took the belt off and drove it up the street same noise,I guess I am sol.Ford said MAYBE it is the timing chain,it will cost about $1200 cdn to fit it.
