Can't get it to upshift properly. It will shift from 1st to 2nd around 26 mph. Won't go into 3rd until 45 mph, and forget overdrive. Need to get up to 70 or so. I'm not pushing it hard. I can force 2nd gear by shifting to "2", but 3rd still won't kick in until 45 - 50. When it up or down shifts, it's smooth, but just at too high rpms. I'm guessing 3000 -3500. Don't have a tach, but it's really screaming.
What gives? Seems to be a new problem. Also the engine 'idles' at 1800 rpm and I'm working on that. May or may not be related. No 'check engine' light coming on, so the computer thinks everything is ok.
There is something wrong with the engine. The first rule of fixing the trans is to fix any engine problem before diagnosing the trans. Many trans problems are just symptoms of an engine problem. Fix the engine and the trans may be fine.
Sounds like a vacuum leak. A high idle is often caused by a vacuum or intake manifold leak. If the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor isn't reading adquate vacuum, then the computer thinks the motor is under much higher load. As a result, it will delay upshifts until maximum rpm.
Put a vacuum gauge on it and see how much vacuum its pulling. I will bet that's your problem.
You will have to check the service manual. There will be a spec for idle and usually cruise throttle.
You may be able to find the spec and proceedure for checking the vacuum and MAP sensor at the Autozone website. They have a pretty complete technical section for stuff like this.
