is it possible to rebuild an e4od tranny your self my truck is a 1995 5.8l 4x4 with 185,000 and i am trying to save a few dollars also is it possible to replace it with an older e4od that does not have push button over drive thanks
I wouldn't recommend doing an E4OD yourself for your first transmission overhaul. They are somewhat finicky units and require a few special tools. Then if you get something wrong it could wipe out a bunch of expensive parts and you will have to do it all over again. You could spend as much doing it twice on parts as if you had bought a Reman transmission.
I would recommend buying a reman and swapping it yourself if you want to save money. A good reman would be a reliable unit and have a warranty.
thanks steve so if it does not have an o/d button it must be an aod could this trans mission be subistuted on a 95 truck with an e4od because i can get a 5.8l motor trans and transfercase very cheap will this cause running problems with my engine witch runs very good i guess my question is does my e40d have any control on the ecm that would cause a running problem
Ford quit using the AOD in '92. '93 and up all use either AODE's or E4ODs. Both of these have O/D Off buttons. If there is no O/D button on your truck there is a possibility that its a C6. C6's are 3 speeds an Ford did continue with C6s on some trucks through '96. These were mostly fleet trucks though.
Someone could have replaced an AODE or E4OD with an AOD (non-electronic) but that would set a transmission code. That shouldn't effect the motor but it would still have an O/D Off button. It just wouldn't work.
I guess I am a little puzzled by your truck. I would think its a C6 since it doesn't have a button. If that's the case, you can't install an E4OD unless you swapped the entire ECU and wiring harness from a donor truck.
my truck has an o/d button but the trans that i can get cheap has a cable from the shift lever on the trans to the throttle plate on the engine. my truck has no cable just some type of electrical conection on the shift lever and a plug on the passinger side of the trans that is why i am assuming that the other tranny is an aod
Oh, OK. Well that's different. I didn't understand you at first.
The trans you "can get cheap" is an AOD. You could probably make it work but you would have to swap the throttle body setup and add the cable to the throttle linkage. It would be a lot of work and the AOD is not near as robust a transmission as the E4OD. I would be worried about it not lasting very long even it it was new.
Also, the E4OD is electronically controlled by the PCM and if there is no transmission there for it to plug into I would expect it to set codes and possibly put the motor in failsafe.
