axle u-joints

axle u-joints
How do you go about changing axle u-joints. 83 f350.searched but couldn,t find alot of info. never really got into a front end other than changeing the hubs . I am not totally convinced this is my problem but was told it could be. Heres the deal. The passenger side axle moves in and out maybe 2 inches enough to knock the c clip off the inside of the locking hub. I just don't understand how the u-joints could cause this.
