I am guessing this was meant to be posted in the General Conversation forum - as such I moved it there

Anyway, to answer your question - they contain minerals. Main ones are Phosphorus, calcium.
Not only that, the standard salt (Sodium Chloride) is essential for absorbtion of amino acids, amongst other things.

Things like iron, copper iodine and other substances are present that are neccesary that a cow may not get in its normal diet of grass etc.

Salt makes the cows retain water, making the steaks juicier.

also they need copper and selenium.

there are blue plastic tubs of hard molasses/minerals that are about the size of two half bushel wash pans staked on top of each other that a lot of farmers buy here in Southern Ohio.

Hey the bottom of the cattle market has fallen out here just this week because of the price of corn shooting up, feeder calves have went from about 1.10 a month ago to .80 monday and tues....fat cattle are steady....

Like the Salt Lick Barbecue in Driftwood Texas? I eat there all the time. That's where they got their name. Read the opening blurb on their page.

I really miss the times I spent out in Corpus Christi, Lubbock and Seminole. My Dad lives in Dallas so at least I do have a reason for another trip soon!
