I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

By the way, I completely agree with you that there's no substitute for a good tranny cooler!

There is no doubt that a cooler is cheaper than one of those machined pans; that sealed my decision.

So my 1st post after just buying a 2000 5.4 Excursion. Looks like I have a tranny problem. When its cold, no problems. After getting to normal temp, I get clunks when in 3rd or 4th. It changes smoothly into gear, then clunks as the rpm goes down. Then a couple if times going uphill in 4th, I got some slippage.

This is a daily driver, just kids and stuff. No boats or trailers.

Is there anything I can do to fix it without replacing the tranny? I am not able to do this myself so any work will be in the shop. Would buying a new tranny online be worth doing or just fix this one?

Thanks in advance for you expert opinion!

Andrew

Just wondering if I can only change the torque converter to save it for now. How much would a new TC cost with labor? I dint really have $3k for a rebuilt one.

I wonder if this could be the slip yoke on the driveshaft? Try greasing it first (cheap fix) and see if that fixes it before buying a whole new or rebuild tranny.

the tranny was the reason Ford bought back my 02 after 2 failures before 50k miles....

limping home in first gear was NOT fun - but we did get home

Andrew, just a little heads up bro, if you want to ask a question specific to your vehicle, especially if it's a problem you're having and it doesn't add to the original authors thread, it's always better to start your own thread. That way it doesn't derail the OP's thread, and you get expert opinions (specific answers) to YOUR problem.

It's especially better to start your own thread instead of reviving a 4 year old thread like this one, unless you are bringing relevant info to an old thread.

Stewart

PS - Sorry I can't help with your trans prob. I always call John Wood whenever I get stumped.

Andrew where are you located? Doing a trans on your own is very difficult with a 4x4.

Hey, sorry for reviving an old thread. I thought it was related, but from now on i'll post a new one. Thanks.

I am in Indiana, I dont plan on doing it myself. I think i'll drive this one to death and then get a jasper rebuilt.

Cheers,
Andrew

Since you don't do any towing with it, and since you have a 5.4L engine, I'd strongly suggest you look into a Ford HD replacement trans from PartsGuyEd, a supporting vendor here at FTE. It's much better than a Jasper unit.

If you were using your Ex as a tow rig, I'd suggest a John Wood trans or a BTS trans, but looking at your needs, a Ford HD unit would be good for you.

Wouldn't go with a Jasper. I think they even dropped the Factory Tech Monster Box or whatever it was called years ago. You can replace just a torque converter. If it isn't the problem and you have metal debris from wear in your transmission oil, you will then be trashing a new torque converter. Can't recommend any transmission more highly than a BTS 4R100. You can replace the 4R100 with a manual but you'll be hacking through your HVAC ducting under the carpet and having to cut holes trough the floor. I remember seeing pics of an Excursion with a Cummins and a manual. With the right tools a transmission can be swapped in your driveway, but I wouldn't call it fun or easy.

For me, a John Wood built trans is the only one I can and would recommend first, over a BTS. But Brian's trans is a very close second place.
