Hi,
I just bought a 1958 F-250 and was trying to decode the serial number. The serial number from the glovebox door describes the truck as a 1960 F-100. This truck has 8 lug wheels and heavy duty suspension. The hood has an F250 logo attached. Does anyone know if the serial number is stamped on the frame? If so where is it located?
Thanks.
That's about the right place to look & sometimes the VIN # can be found stamped on the radiator support as well.
By-the-by, what's riveted to the Dispatch Box Door is called a "DATA Plate" by FoMoCo, as it contains more information than just the VIN #.
Try these links to decode the vin. Also set up a gallery so we can see the truck and be of more assistance. It's good to see another orphan on FTE! Welcome!
Thanks for the replies. I looked last night on the framerails (both sides) just aft of the firewall with no luck. It was pouring so I didn't spend a lot of time under there. Can you be more descriptive as to the size and orientation of the marking? Is it near the body mount? Is yours horizontal or verticle? I'm really hoping to find it. How do I post a picture of the truck? I'm new to this stuff. It's pretty exciting tho.
Thanks again for any help.

Some of the old Kelley Blue Books used to give locations for VIN numbers. The numbers have to be somewhat easily accessible for DMV and/or law enforcement personnal to access them.
In the old days, there was usually only one place on the car/truck where one could find the VIN stamped besides the usual location.
Now, the numbers appears multiple places.

The VIN on my 1956 F100 is on the top of the frame rail a couple of inches back from the flange on the right exhaust manifold. It was covered with grime, which made it hard to find.
You are more than likely going to have to Scrape Off or Steam Clean the areas so that you may be able to find it to uncover it from all those years of road grime.
On my 56 I finally found a very faint stamping on top of the frame rail ahead of the firewall and just behind the front axle on the driver`s side. It was hard to find after a careful cleaning using a bright light. It has to be there somewhere so keep looking, it won`t be easy to see as the numbers are fairly obscure and not stamped deep enough to be obvious.
I looked again this weekend and finally found the VIN number on top of the passenger side frame rail just ahead of the front axle. The numbers are faint but legible. thanks for all the replies.

So? What did ya find? What year, motor, color, etc?
Most of the time the frame serial stamping will only state the unit manufacture number which includes the year, the rest of the info is on the acutal vin plate (on the door/glove box door).
I couldn't read all the serial number on the frame but what I could see matched the data plate in the glove box. It appears that the 58 I bought is actually a 1960 with a 1958 hood. As for the drivetrain I can only guess that someone changed it over to f250 running gear. On the bright side the body is very solid and it's a stepside with a short wheel base which I think will make an attractive truck when it's completed. I do plan to pull the cab and bed off to clean and repaint the frame in the spring and I'm hoping to find the serial number stamped in another location.
