Chad you have to meet my friend Sundance. And we'll get a trip planned to Area 51 (well as close as you can get and not go to jail). I have been told the test site at Green River is getting active again also.
Really? I thought Green river was closed due to too much Radiation... I've never really been to area 51 but did get to Tonapah out in Nevada... at the time it was where the stealth fight was housed, before it was public, now it is at white sands. I spent 6 mos at white sands (Holloman AFB) for training once.. pretty neat. That was for the Solar Observatory .. that's one thing NM has it's sun.
Sundance went by the old test site at Green River last summer. Larry said he found a new road and went to explore it. He was stopped by two guys with firearms that had a black SUV and was told to leave. Sounds like a good story for Bob to tell at the campfire next April.
Guess it's time to complete the the story of how the trip went. The Friday I left Wichita I meet up with Outlaw and Caveman at the town of Capulin, NM. We drove a short distance to the Capulin Volcano NM where smoke had visable for miles. Seems they were doing a controled burn and we weren't able to drive to the top. Had to do that on the way home. The town of Folsom North of the volcano was the site of of a number of train robberies. At least one of the members of the wild bunch had been involved in one of those robberies so we went up to get pictures of where it happened. After that we headed west toward Eagles Nest. On the way we looked for a canyon where there was a shoot out between the posse and outlaws that had just robbed the train at Folsom. We camped in a FS campground east of Eagles Nest not west as I posted earlier. We were at 7600 ft and that was the coldest night. The next day we went looking for a road to play on. Larry had an AWD Mounty with lots of plastic hanging down so the road he wanted to drive on was just too much fun for the Mounty. So we headed back and stopped at a Memorial before heading down to Angel Fire. We found a dirt road that the Mounty liked. Late that afternoon we made it to Ft. Union for some pic's and history on the Santa Fe trail. Then we headed back to the west up in the mountians looking for another campsite. We found another FS campground at 8600 ft. with cotton on the ground (well thats what we were calling it). That night we had a camp visitor. It kept making noise in the stream 50 ft. away. Didn't seem to mind that we knew it was there. We sat around the campfire with our shootin irons that night. The next day Caveman left for home west bound. Larry and I headed be East the way we came in. We went down to Ft. Sumner for some Billy the Kid stuff then over to Rosewell. Stayed in a motel in Rosewell that night. The next day we went in search of the real crash site. We had trouble finding it and Green was given a little work out exploring a trail. We did locate the site and it was late in the day and we headed for Smoky Bears grave. Made it to town one minute before the place closed so we have a BBQ meal and headed out of town. Made it back up to Santa Rosa and found another cheep motel room. The next morning we drove back up to the Volcano and made the drive to the top. After that I headed for Clayton to spend the night and Larry headed home.
Green did well on the trip. Still had the trouble with the check engine light but is made 19 mpg on all fuel stops except the first one. My laptop had trouble. Guess it didn't like it down in that area much. It's back home and running great now.
Larry's story's will be much different. Should have some good pic's of Green playing on rocks.
