hauling a rig

Okay...want to get this truck about 500 miles away...motor is not in it so I can't drive it back. Has anyone hauled a truck in a Ryder...say 24 footer? I tried looking into car haulers but they want from $800--$900 to do that....way out of my price. Any advice...my 67 has the motor 352...but I don't have a flatbed to haul it with and I am not too sure if I want to put that much on my motor for 500 miles... ???? Thanks, appreciate anything...

if you got something to pull it with... go to your local u-haul dealer... cost 52.00 per day (for local, meaning you rent it, and return to the same location)

Where is the rig you want to haul located? And what is it?
My boss had his 53 C-600 hauled from Cashmere to Bothell, Wa
for a little over 100 bucks by a guy who deleivers used containers, he did it on his otherwise empty return trip. It might be worth looking into, if you arent in a hurry.

Jim

Are you hauling an F-1? If it has rear wheels, a car dollie will handle it. They can be rented for about $50. I pulled my 53 F100 (with engine) from VA to IA (900+ miles) with my 95 F100 with a 300CI six cylinder. Wasn't too big a deal. An engineless F-1 should not be bad at all. The car dollies pull very nice and the tow vehicle doesn't have to have near the brakes you need with a tandem axle car trailer.

hauling a rig

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jul-02 AT 04:23 PM (EST)]I used a U-Haul truck and dual axle trailer to tow my F3 600 miles. Can't remember what size the truck is, but make sure you specify you'll be towing a vehicle with it...

I've got a picture of this in my gallery if you want to see how scary it looks... :7

Try a car trailer from Penske. I towed a 55 F100 on one and the trailer has its own brakes independent of the truck used to tow it. When you slow down the trailer brakes engage. I towed mine from Va to OK. Worked great.

It is totally possible. Just make sure that the dimensions at the openings of the back door of the truck will accomadate your Ford. And make sure there is a way to load and unload safely. Rent a truck that has "e-track" installed in the walls so that you can strap the truck down safely.

I drive a 26 Foot Bobtail (Straight truck) for a living, and have used my hauler for MANY projects. Most recently, I hauled a 56 cab to Riverside from San Francisco while transporting and delivering my other 68 mustang fastback to my Mom. I have also rescued my 1997 GMC Z-71 by driving it up loading ramps int the back of my truck. I have a pic that I will try and post, and will also e-mail if youwould like. Just make sure the weight ratings will carry your load, and if the truck is not running, I have used a "come=along" to help get cars into the truck. BIGGEST THING: Make sure you have a way of securingyour load, and make sure your vehicle is rated to carry that much weight. You may be able to avoid the scales, but JUST IN CASE! Also inquire if the truck you plan on renting is a Class C license ( or whatever your license rating is.) Oh yeah, and a 24 footer should be just fine.

OK, I tried to add pic.... go here
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/keahi73
and then look under Project Cars and trucks. There are a few pics of the GMC inside my Bobtail.
BEst of luck!

I have used a tow dolly to haul cars and trucks all over Texas and they are a great way to go. Hauled a 60 F-100 400 miles with an S-15 GMC Jimmy (sorry about the reference to that other company), just don't try to use AOD in the hills. My 95 F-150 withh 300 and 5 speed does a pretty fair job hauling the tow dolly, too.
