Odd Timing Issue

I just got a 1988 F-150,300 EFI Auto. The truck was running rich and stumbling a bit so I did a tune up.Plugs, wires, air filter, oil change, cap, rotor and front pads.Went to start the truck and it cranked like the battery was about dead.Tried to jump it off and it still acted like that.Checked my plug wires over and over along with the plugs. Was all fine.Replaced the starter after a few hrs.Still the same.(junk yard $25)A friend said it was the timing and I was like "yeah ok wtf ever spin the effing distributor it ain't the timing" Well he spun it all the way advanced and the SOB fired up.If I set the timing to 10 before TDC it runs like a bag of 3 legged dogs but if I advance it to what I estimate to be about 30 BTDC it runs like a champ. My question is why is this thing even running with the spark that far advanced let alone running pretty good. It's not great but it drives and doesn't knock or ping.Jumpped cam timing?Any ideas would be great. Thanks guys.

Ryan

Two possible things gone wrong. First, maybe you are looking at the wrong set of timing marks. There are two on the timing cover and two on the balancer giving you 4 possible timing mark combinations. Only one is right: the stamped tab on the cover and the thin line on the balancer.

The other possibility is that the wires are in the right order, but they are all one spot off.
