My mom's looking for a new vehicle to get in the summer to replace her 2004 F-150. She's been looking quite hard at the 2007 chargers, with the 3.5 HO. My question is has anybody ever driven in one? If so whats your opinion? And also what kind of fuel millage do the 3.5's get?
I've never driven a Charger, but this past weekend I had the opportunity to drive a Chrysler 300C (on which the Charger is based), with the Hemi. I was very impressed. Dynamically, it reminded me a lot of my buddy's '00 Caddy Deville. I didn't drive it hard (maybe a lil' fast, but not hard), so the FWD/RWD didn't come into play, but I suspect it would beat the Deville there.
I don't know if the Charger might be a little stiffer sprung, but unless they drastically changed the suspension from the 300, I would bet it's a very nice compromise of ride and handling.
Drove a Hemi Charger rental car last summer. Wouldn't fog the tires, but then them tires is 9" accross.. As for V6 mpg, just look at the epa and subtract 1 or 2 in the city and 2 or 3 highway...
Anyway, decent ride, drove fine, plenty-o-power. Not sure how the V6 would compare, but I see a bunch of them around and they ain't cussin' it at the lights or crawling along on the shoulder....
When I sold dodges the 3.5 was overrated in hp at 250, the the 3.7 felt stronger in certain aplliications. The charger is a heavy car and is a bit under powered with the 3.5. A small engine in a heavy car can hurt mpg as the the car has to struggle, where as the same engine in a lighter car can have excellent mpg. Besides the charger being ugly, as of 04, dodge still had alot of quality control problems, I could tell you stories ha ha. I don't know about now as I know longer sell them. If she wants a 4-door sedan with good power to weight ratio and excellent mpg, she should check out the fusion, or it's lincoln/mercury counterparts. It has very high quality and owner satisfaction marks and they look awesome !! This year you can get the lincoln with the new 3.5 265 hp and still has good mpg. The charger is a great nameplate, they just put it on the wrong car, it would of been more at home on a 2-door midsize sedan with a hemie, now your talken, YYEEEEHHAAAWWW !!!
Well the reason for buying is:
Something good on fuel (30+ mpg)
Must have soild front end (nothing short: etc focus..)
Something that looks decent
And needs to be able to last.
Well the Charger fails on the "Looks good" argument.
That is probably the only reason why I refuse to own modern Dodge and Chryselor vehicles - they all look exactly the same. The Charger looks like the Ram pickup, looks like the station wagon, looks like the shorty car, etc...
The ford fusion is a very good looking car, it's the bomb !!!!! It gets excellent mpg for it's size, 221 hp, = to the charger v6 cause the fusion is lighter. It's getting quality and design + satisfaction awards. Yoo can get it in awd. I would get a black sel with moon roof and 17" wheels, 2.3 duratec I-4 with the 5 speed manual and put a F2 turbo kit on it, I'm sure that wouldn't work for your mum's, but it would work for me hee hee. The 17" wheels isn't ricer, thats what the sel comes with. The mercury and lincoln versions look nice as well. The 500 is a nice looking bigger car, the older folks seem to love it and it can be had in awd, it just needs the new 3.5 v6 to round out a great package. I should of sold fords instead of dodges, I'm better at it ha ha.
Fusion is out of the question. Beside that its ugly as sin, ma' swears she will never buy another Ford. Not because she doesn't like the vehicles, she loves her truck, but its because of the poor treatment you get as a costomer. Our neighbours have a fusion and arent very impressed. The charger is under consideration because it looks good and those who I've talked to say it gets pretty decent milage. Also the chrysler dealership here treats costomers like gold (before AND after) you buy the vehcle. I know because I did the daeling on my brothers 2001 dodge,
Well all I can tell mom is to go buy one of those ugly chargers and a new pair of shoes as she may be walking alot ha ha. Chrysler has had a quality control problem and after reading some forums, it still exists, thier auto tranny's tend to be an issue for one, not all models. I never thought I would say this, but a honda or toyota would be a better choice. I personally don't believe chrysler will be around for to many more years, Diamler is allready talking about spinning them off, they have 80,000 unsold units left from last year. The good part is, I'm sure dodge will give her the best deal and if see likes the looks of those things, it's a marriage made in heven. Dodge will deal to sell thier product, I'll give them that, it killed the poor salesman, but the customer would make out like a bandit.

Well I can safley say that a Toyota or Honda are a no no in this house. VWs are also being considered. As for the walking comment you happend to contradict yourself with your comment about chrysler. At our local Dodge the costomer is treated very well. Our Ford dealership used to be the best around, especially on costomer service. But ever since the owner change nobody likes the way there operating, not to mention not honouring warrenty. (you'll understand if you read the story about the console on fire. But aside from all that any sugestions for good vehicles would be appriciated. I'm not really up to date on what buick ot saturn or others have really.
I personally don't see the counterdiction, chrysler has a quality control problems and because of it they deal to unload thier product. Surely you have to have more than 1 ford dealer, we have a dozen in my local area. This is a ford forum, people will tend to be bias toward ford. Buicks are a very sturdy car, smooth ride, very comfortable, the older folks seem to love them. The new lacross is even sporty looking. I didn't think of buick, but that would be worth checking out. Also the chyrsler 300 is a well built car with a lot of german tech, a much better choice than the charger and it gets high marks in quality. Most of the quality problems we had were in the dodge truck, suv line and dodge stratus, but DC has been working hard to improve quality. Volvo, benz and bmw are good cars I supose, but don't know much about them, pretty expensive as well I'm sure. Yeah, I would check out buick and also the chrysler 300 for a start.
Hey red star, does that 3.5 feel like it has 250 hp to you ? The ones I drove in the chrysler 300 m felt weak, the 3.7 in the dakota felt stronger. Also have heard others say that they didn't think the 3.5 was producing no 250 hp.
Well the the 300 is advertized as being german engineered with german quality, motor trend say's it's top notch, the charger doesn't get the same rav's, the platform is only the under pinning. There's a lot of vehicles that share the same platform but their not the same vehicle.
