I drive a 2000 F250 crew cab 4x4 with the 7.3. My truck will not start in the morning unless pluged in the night before. This problem began in the summer when it was warm during the night. I have changed the glow plug relay but nothing changed. How can the glow plugs be checked without removing them? My manual says there are 2 fuses, one for each glow plug bank, in the glow plug wiring harness but I can't locate them. Any help would be appreciated.
So the motor turns over, but doesn't start unless you have the block heater on over night?
Fast start glow plug system
The glow plug system consists of:
² eight glow plugs
² the glow plug relay
² engine oil temperature (EOT) sensor
² barometric pressure (BARO) sensor
The glow plug system is electronically controlled by the PCM. The PCM
energizes the glow plugs immediately after the ignition is placed in the
ON position, then determines how long the glow plugs will be on
according to the EOT and BARO sensors. The required time for the glow
plugs to be energized decreases as the engine oil temperature and
barometric pressure increase.
The relay could of failed. However you are getting this far?
3. Turn the key to the ON position.
When the WAIT TO START light
goes off, turn the key to START.
(For Canadian vehicles, the daytime
running lamps will be on if the
parking brake is not applied and the key is turned to ON.)
4. When the engine starts, release the key. The glow plugs will continue
to be activated for up to two minutes. If the engine is not started before
the activation ceases, the glow plug system must be reset by turning the
ignition key to OFF.
Leaving the ignition key ON for over two minutes without starting may
make starting difficult because the glow plugs will cease activation.
Reset the system by turning the ignition key to OFF and then back to
ON again.
I have not changed the glow plugs. I wanted to check them without removing the valve covers. Everything appears to be funtioning. The wait to start light comes on and goes off. Longer if cold and shorter after driving and warming up just like it should. Someone mentioned using an ohm meter to check the plugs, where do you conect the positive side to check.
Thanks again,
Josh
