Dramatic Mileage Decrease 02

After putting 7K miles on dusty Canadian and North Dakota back roads, on the way back to Nevada I noticed my mileage dropped from 12.5-13.5 to 8.5-9.2 in the last three hundred miles. I am hauling a Lance Camper and total weight for the last six weeks was 12,5000 lbs.<o =""></o><o =""></o>

Any ideas on why like needing new air filter <st1:city w:st="on"><st1 ="">NAPA</st1></st1:city> mod or needing Oil change which I plan to do. <o =""></o>

<o =""></o>
BTW the new CPS worked like a charm and this 7.3 is the cats meow<o =""></o><o =""></o>

Good to be hone
Thanks in advance

Don't base mileage changes over a 300 mile trip. Wind conditions, temps, fuel quality, altitude, etc can all play a part.

If your maintenance is up to date, then track your mileage over a longer period of time to determine if you really do have problems.

One last thing, are you hand calculating mileage, or just reading from the overhead console?

all the more reason to use an additive in the fuel. stanadyne or diesel kleen are both excellent products.
i would recommend a complete service of the engine. change the oil, air and fuel filter. change the oil and have it analyzed (blackstone labs is a great option). and get your diesel only from a place that does alot of business if you can.
if your in constant dusty conditions, then i would recommend a AIS filter or do what i do with my kwik6637 filter, wrap it in ladies nylons, (old off roaders trick keeps the leaves and big things off the filter) as a filter pre-wrap.
after all this has been done do as Pocket suggests, keep a log and compute your mileage by hand and stay away from the overhead lie-o-meter.
hope this helps a bit. let us know that you do and if anything helps.

OK

It was a 7000 mile trip but it was just the last 300 miles I noticed it. I use the ladies hose over the NAPA filter. I did a complete service 8 weeks ago with filters, oil even tranny before leaving. I use diesel kleen.

I'll blow out the filter change the oil and see if she goes back up. We do have head wind out here in the great basin and a front was coming through.

Thanks
