empiretc...

No, I typically don't truly top off my tank... I just dribble up to the next full dollar increment.

Personally, I'm not really concerned about the "true" mileage right now, as I'm just trying to do things the same way every time as I make one minor mod at a time so I can get a real apples-to-apples comparison.

Being new to the entire diesel arena, I'm still discovering a whole lot. I'm trying to be patient and take the approach to installing mods on a priority versus cost basis. Low hanging fruit will be my first attack, especially the ones that are cheap and easy.

Once I get through the evaluation of fuel additive (DK), I will make more of a concerted effort to get some true fillups to get more accurate mpg calcs.

The reason for my post was to get some folks to think a little about how they were mis-interpretting what they were seeing, and then drawing invalid conclusions from misinterpretations.

I know... we engineering types are a different breed, adn can sometimes be a little **** over analytical issues. Forgive my inability to perform a personal EB override here. (EB = engineer brain).

Hey, BTW...
..... the OPTIMIST says the glass is "half full" and the PESSIMIST says the glass is "half empty", but.....

..... the ENGINEER says the glass is "twice as big as it needs to be"!

Just a different way of looking at things!

If you haven't been doing true fillups, how do you know DK is working or not? I do true fillups so I know whether it works for me or not. In the case of DK or other snake oil, the answer is "not"

Newbie, have you at least one the 6637 filter mod yet? I noticed an immediate MPG gain with that alone. First 2 months I had my truck I wrote down everything done to it and how many miles run between fillups. Apples to apples.

aklim:

I'm on my first tank with DK (only 150 miles thus far). As long as I go back to the same station I went to last time (and they only have one pump), and I fill up in the same manner I have been using to-date, I should have an apples-to-apples comparison. I am, though, as a result of all the discussion on this particular thread, considering going ahead and beginning "to the neck" fillups to help ensure the best evaluation possible.

empiretc:
I'm not familiar with the 6637 filter mod. What is that exactly?

Also, I am not sure, but am suspecting that I have a chip installed. Haven't looked yet, but have verified the absence of a speed limiter by accelerating above 110mph on a long road trip right after I got the vehicle. I haven't yet even checked to see what mods may have been performed by the previous owner (purchased from a stealer in Houston on 09/10 of this year, the day before relocating to my new office here in Birmingham, AL).

if you hit 110, something has been done. at stock, they are limited to 95. check you PCM and see if there is a chip attached to it. It may have had a program downloaded to it if you cannot find anything physically done.

Thanks for the confirmation. But I have to ask out of ignorance, where will I find the PCM?

Also... you haven't told me about the 6637 mod yet. What is that? Just a filter changeout? Or is more hardware required?

The pcm is on the drivers side by the e-brake. YOu will see 2 bolts holding the plastic housing. there is also a bolt in the plug under the hood. Its easy to take out.

All the info you need on the 6637 can be found here:

Thanks, emptiretc. I'll get on that filter mod pretty quickly.

cheaper then the AIS, but some say the 6637 makes alot of drone noise. is it really really bad for long trips? i wouldnt mind it so much on short around town drives, but iv had noisey exhosts cars before for long road trips and its anoying.

im thinking an AIS's in the next few months. a transmission repair has taken most of my mod money away from me. but will be good to go in january. getting the lower gauge pod as well. and look into that harpoon/hutch mod. thanks everyone for the good info.
