THANK YOU. I feel pretty good about this now. I printed off your directions and every picture. Got them in a 3 ring binder ready to go. Just need to find a Pickle Fork and get the stuff from HD to make the press.
No pickle fork, use a tie rod or pittman arm puller to separate the tie rods from the knuckle. Using a pickle fork will tear the rubber seal, and a puller is recommended. Here is the link to the picture of the seal driver. 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" can't remember for sure which one I used but just take your seal with you to HD and match it the flange size.
Thanks for everything. I will be asking if it comes to it. I showed my buddy (duramax owner) my binder of your directions and pics. I think he is always a little impressed with how helpful this forum is.
I'm in Indianapolis. Was just 50 miles from Cinci. last weekend deer hunting. If you're ever in the area and stuck on the road or something, just let me know.
So today is Turkey Day and I have begun the project.
I have only worked when I could get away so I am to the nut on the lower ball joint, once that is off the knuckles are off and time to press out and in new ball joints.
Problem now is I don't have that size socket and I'm very afraid to use a cresent. Anyone know what size that nut is so I can get the right wrench in the morning?
1 1/8 or 1 /16 I believe. Yes you don't want to be using a crescent, you will round it off. As it is you probably will need a cheater and a breaker bar to loosen it if it is like mine was.
It is actually 1 5/16". So I finally got it done. The extreme rattle is gone but I still have some noise. I'm going to check the shocks and sway bar next!
When following directions on the ball joints, on the part of re-installing the axles. Most directions say to tap them into the knuckle with a piece of wood before replacing the hub. Tap very lightly. I kocked one too far in. Then the snap ring did not make it into the groove after the rotor before the manual hub locks. I had to disassemble and knock it out a little.
The other note is to make sure that when installing the ball joints into the knuckle, install the lower first. I accidently put the upper on first then realized that I couldn't get the lower on. Opps.
