When the gauge says hot, it starts to boil... Im not at all doubting the accuracy of the gauge at this point

When I had both my manual gauges and dash gauges hooked up, the temp gauge was the most accurate.
Fuel does OK after I adjusted the sending units when I installed the new ones.
Amp gauge has never moved since day one..
Oil pressure was totally inaccurate from day one.

The fan clutch might be bad but is there a shroud on the radiator that goes around the fan? Is there anything on the front or underneath that might disrupt the air flow – air dam, non-diesel bumper, bug screen, maybe an oil or extra large transmission cooler? Is the fan / clutch the correct one for the engine?

There is nothing blocking the rad that I can tell... the fan says 1990 7.3L on it ( white wrecker style writing ) ... assume that a 6.9 and a 7.3 can use the same fan... the shroud is one I went and found at a wrecker.... when I got the truck it didnt have one... it is the correct one for the non AC rad... the funny longer less tall rad... I am running a powerstroke style bumper with my 1992 front clip, not the gas bumper.... it is a manual trans, no cooler, no oil cooler out there, no air dam or bug screen either....

I have a buddy with an 87 F350 6.9L, but the hard part is its his only vehicle...

I need to borrow his clutch fan, take my trailer, go for a 2 hour drive, tow slowly up a logging road, find out, return home, and switch fans back....

he does owe me a favor for pulling him out of a ditch though.... hmmmmm

Need Test

PLC7.3 could you send me the Fan clutch test, I'm a newbie and can't e-mail you but I have a truck that is over heating and I've changed everything but the water pump and fan clutch. 84 F350 6.9 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...f350-6-9l.html

The antifreeze steam from the heater core got to me driving this home from the farm where I found it, you can wipe all you want but the stuff just smears!

If you're overheating, and your heater core is leaking coolant, then I'm thining you may have found the problem....

OK, I see. The leaking heater core was when you first bought it, but its been fixed now. My bad.

Well, given the list of what you've done, there are only a couple of possibilities I can see. Either the fan clutch, water pump, or temp sensor isn't working. Check the water in the radiator - if it is hot on top and cold on bottom, I'd be suspicious of the water pump. If both hoses are close to the same in temperature, then I'd be more suspicious of the fan clutch.

I'm assuming that when your temp guage goes high, you have confirmed that it is truly hot and not just a guage inaccuracy - like Dave suggested to Mr.Bob?

I also replace the radiator cap with a new one that has a lever, when I pull the lever up I can see (and hear) the radiator venting into the over-fill reserve container. I was reading about a check valve in the thermostat housing that if plugged could cause the the thermostat not to open, air would be trapped below the thermostat. When I changed the thermostat I didn't see any check valve....

but that doesn't make sense, the top of the radiator is hot and to get hot the fluid has to pass the thermostat. Radiator fluid flows from the bottom of the radiator to the water pump then into the engine and OUT the thermostat to the top of the radiator, I think.

Red face shaft play or what

I removed everything, radiator, belts, hoses, power steering, A/C, Alternator, vacuum pump, thermostat, all mounting brackets so I could replace the water pump, it has a 1/2 inch of shaft play. I really can't believe I didn't check the shaft play when I installed the new belts.
