Got an old fishing bud pushing 80 years old. He hooked his battery up backwards or at least shorted it out. on the cumputer under the dash It has two grey wiring harness plugs in it. As I have it on my desk less the housing and only the burnt plug with the wires sniped of I cant really tell you left right top or bottom. The plug that is fryed is on the bottom for lack of anyother way to discribe it. Looks like a 4 prong plug maybe 5 as the last one on the bottom is fryed can't read anything on that termanal. next one up on the board reads sensor 150. than a notch in the plug. next above that is IGN 298 next Control 151 next brake 475. the truck is an 88 VIN1ftcr15t9jpa86199. With the computer pluged in it will start and run as long as you are squerting gas down the intake. Our local Nappa Stealer told them that there were somthing like fifty different computors made for this year and modle and that they would not order anything without part numbers. Scary But True. I think I could solder a wire to the burt termenal and make it work. but I do not want this Old timmer standed because of somthing I did. The rest of the board looks perfect. No pick a parts around as we have been looking for most of a year. Ford steeler said don't Even bring it in they won't look at it. Plus It is a $1000.00 ferry ride to get there and back. Anybody got a part number for the board and where can i get a plug with a pigtail to splice into. If ya need more info get ahold of me any way ya can. Getting this old Ranger back on the road is going to be an XMas present from a bunch of his freinds. I know you guys rock so thanks in advance.
Don,t know what size the engine is for sure other than it is an efi 4 cyl. was hopeing the vin number in the first post would have had that info. But I don't have the info to know how to read it. All I have in front of me is the circit board out of the computer and the melted plug that pluged into the bottom end of it. The plug is rectanguler and the only damage I can see is to the last tap on the computer board witch says somthing I can't read followed by GND. Ground? is this circit board the extent of the computer or is there more to the housing it was in that we need. I think it would be best to replace both the harness and board. But we can't afford new and as I said earlyer we have looked at a dozon or more rangers and none are even close. I am considering just trimming the plug of to clear the burnt post on the board and soldering a wire on it. and splising everyting back together. Besides reseting the fuel pump switch. What eles may I encounter. If this is just the primery ground to the computer than as long as it is,nt burned thru the harness somwere else will I be ok. Why is nappa and ford saying these are near imposible parts to get. Anyone have a parts truck I could just ger the computer and the smaller 4 wire plug with enough wire to splice back into the old harness. Thanks Guys Old Extry and me will apriciate any and all help. Ya the old boys name is Extry. But thats another story
So what do ya all think. should I try soldering this back together or just replace the board. and it that is the route then where do I get the info to know what part# bord to order.
I got one of them new cold solder irons ya see on TV. guess i will try it out. Can,t hurt it any more. And I don't seem to be getting much help here. Thanks fryer I would have had to run down a manuale to get that info. Thanks
Donn't giveup, it was sorta late here on the east coast when you posted, by tonight our time, there should be some computer guru's helping. Hang in there.
I have an '88 2x w/o engine or, unfortunately, computer.
I do know that there is a ground wire from the loom that attaches to the body right near the computer mount. If what you see on the board says gnd that would be a ground wire.
I could pull a loom from the truck if you end up needing it.
So far, I guess that you can't go wrong trying to at least get a wire to splice in.
Another thing to check is all of the fuses and fusable links to make sure that power goes where it needs to.
I will have to look into my manuals to see if there is further help I can offer, but as Wendell says, there should be some more feed back later as the thread gets looked at.
I, for sure am not an electrical whiz.
If I can find the time I will have a look at my '88 4x4 and see if I can visualize what you are seeing.
Well it looks like the only choice is to solder a ground on the computor board. Splice everything back together check for other burnt grounds maybe ad afew more. And hope for the best. He hooked the battery up pos ground and it looks like he fryed every ground on the rig.
