How much "Power" is enough?

These days, Diesel engines from the factory are coming with sufficient power for doing the job of hauling and towing, but most of us always tend to want more, including myself.

So, I thought I'd see what you folks figure would be "enough" power that you feel you would be sufficiently satisfied?

Our early Powerstrokes came with 215 - 235 HP from the factory, and back when they came out we where amazed at all the available power! Now, of course doubling those numbers isn't that difficult for those who aren't afraid to loosen their wallets, all this of course being "bolt-on" additions basically.
You eventually "do" come to an end of power add-on's being bolt on, and internal work may be required, but that is mainly for those wishing to go to sled pulls or drag racing, more than the average user.

Just so you get a better feel for the situation, it's important to note that once you get to a certain point in modifications where you feel you will be happy, often after a while the "power" bug hits you again, and you think a little more wouldn't hurt.

I'm currently at about 400 HP (with a few tweaks) at the rear wheels, and feel another 100 - 125 HP would be nice, where I could say "thats enough"!
In reality, I'm happy where I'm at, as I have added modifications for my truck to be a good "tow" vehicle, but I'm at a stage now where my injectors put out more fuel than my turbo can give it "air", thus that is my next option, so as you can see you get to a point where the mods start getting more expensive too! Working out which turbo would be best for the job takes some research, but these days we have more options in this category than we ever have had.
With that said, for those of us that work on a budget, there are "used" variations out there as well, as others try specific modifications, then decide to change after a short while, but again, research is needed for the "fit" to work on your particular truck.

In any event, for those willing to say, where do you feel you would be satisfied in the "Power" department? Have you had an appreciable "Horsepower/Torque" rating in the back of your mind where you'd like to be some day? If so, let us all know what it is, and perhaps why you came up with that figure!

Thanks in advance.

I would be happy at the 350 hp mark. This is with stage 1 injectors and a few other supporting mods with it. I think this would be the best option for me because I would be making more hp than newer 7.3 superdutys and the motor is still good enough in stock form to handle this power. It all boils down to money, if you have it you can go crazy with these things. If you dont, you are behind the rest of the pack.

I'm at the beginning stage. I have the stock 225 HP and 460 - 480 lb-ft torque.

This has been enough power what I currently need the truck to do. I will be adding a sizable trailer, (me, the wife, two daughters, chocolate lab), and plan on increasing the HP and torque.

How much is enough? Well, I'm not sure. I don't need a 1/4-mile demon, but passing big-rigs on both up-slopes of Donner Summit heading to and from the grandparents, while towing the previously mentioned trailer, would be very close.

I recently bought the EDGE evolution programmer. First I programmed for 60 hp increase than last Friday I upped it to 80 hp than today I backed it down to 60 hp. the only other mod I have is the 6637 filter, I will be ordering new exhaust 3" down pipe to 4" exiting just behind the cab.

I'm running my superchip tuner on the towsafe (50hp??) right now. Also have the FPR shimmed, open exhaust and intake. Pretty happy with that now. Want injectors, but also want a new vehicle in the next few years, so I'm holding off. no idea what im running for hp/torque. any guesses anyone??

I guess you need more power for beating the street racers in Surrey don't ya

My 95 F-450 PSD has enough power then again I came from a IDI which was pretty slow but did the job. Both my F-450s weigh 8300lbs empty so I'am heavier than most 3/4 ton trucks.

There is never enough... until there is too much... add a hundred horses and you're getting close.

Right now I'm basically stock. Open intake, shimmed FPR and gutted cat. I currently run the superchips on tow performance. I am still in the process of saving for injectors, bigger exhaust and chip. I have most of the parts needed to install an intercooler in the near future. Another 100+ hp would be pretty good about now. I tow a small 24.5 foot fifth wheel. The dog is no longer with us and the kids will be out of the house in the next year. The trailer is the right size for just the wife and myself. I really like the new superdutys but my truck is paid for and runs well. Plus I'm in my forties and grew up with the "old" body style. This is what a truck should look like!

400/900 works for me enough power to drag 20k in hay and trailer behind me with a great tow setup can run the snot out of it without worrying about egts too much very reliable very little smoke but still has daily driveabilty and mild enough to smoothly pull the horse trailer and have a somewhat friendly clutch too.

well if i was drag racing or sled pullin there is no such thing as too much.
