I puchased a 2003 SD 6 litre used about 6 months ago, dealer said and showed me the invoices that all the filters and fluids were changed. The truck was almost past it's warranty for kilometers, had 157,000 when I bought it. Now 6 months latter I was going to change all the filters again and when I checked out the HFCM water drain plug to drain any water it was stripped. I am looking for the best suggestions to remove the plug and put in the updated I/H plug. Do I remove the whole pump form the frame and work on it or can I remove the 4 small bolts that look like they hold the front cover that the plug is screwed into and work on it then?
Because of the kilometers on the trcuk now it no longer is covered by warranty and the dealer is denying any damage on their part so I am stuck doing it myself.
belle3006, it has been recommended to buy a plug that can be finger tightened on this forum along with a picture and Ford part number on the Diesel Doctor page to eliminate the problem of stripping the OEM plug. I wish I could recommend where to purchase the plug but I haven't had any success finding a supplier. The part number posted is not a bonafide Ford part number. Maybe some who has been able to get the newer plug will read this and advise where to buy one. Good luck.
"belle3006" knows about the updated plug he mentioned it in his first post. The plugs come in the Ford LCF trucks.
The part number you have is an International part number. Go to your local International dealer and they will have the plug. If it is out of stock they can get it in 2-3 days.
Maybe you could use a small drill bit with a angle-chuck drill to make two small holes on either side of the stripped hex-hole that would fit a Spanner Bit like the one pictured here http://www.hudsonfasteners.com/sec/sec_sp_bit.htm , assuming there's a bit big enough.
I don't know if you can find a bit like this at Lowes or HD, just a thought.
Here's the International drain plug #2589259C91 , in case you don't already have it. You might as well pickup some filters while you're there: Fuel filter kit #1847170C92 $37.26 Oil filter #1840752C91 $20.74
I have seen that you can remove a stripped HFCM on the vehicle by simply epoxying a 6mm hex wrench into the stripped HFCM and removing it that way.
Also 6E7Z-9C082-A is the proper Ford part number for the updated HFCM. If your Ford dealer is having a hard time finding this part, explain to them it is a Blue Diamond part and for a LCF medium duty. They should have an easier time referencing it that way. Any dealer can get this part. Most likely will have to be ordered though.
Thanks for the advise, I already purchased the new updated plug from my local International dealer, hard part is trying to get the old plug out without damaging anything else. If the plate with the plug comes out easy I can work on it at my work bench and not under the truck with all the rain and wind we are having here British Columbia.
It is the hex that strips out, probably from using a standard hex rather than the required 6mm metric hex.
Myself I replaced mine for convenience. The fuel flows more accurately, meaning not all over the axle. No need for any tools. It also stays in place, so no little part to lose.
I have an 03 PSD and the same thing happened to my plug, stripped out. The cause, in my case, was due to the old style plug and corrosion. When I bought the truck couple of years ago with about 15K the HFCM looked like it had never been drained and I stripped the plug w/6mm hex. I tried to drill and use an easy out to no avail. I ended up replacing the whole cover, (took about 20 min) when I got it off you could tell the plug had siezed and bonded to the cover because of lack of draining. Sensor was full of corrosion as well, guess that's why the light wasn't on. Definatly if you have the old style plug would recommend replacement ASAP.
Most likely it is from over tightening of the plug. The plug I think is made of aluminum or another soft alloy. Even using the 6mm mine stripped out.
I agree it is a very soft metal. I have done the same thing. over tightened and then stripped it out. It is difficult to fix with the driveshaft in the way.
