guys--i have a 78 f150 4x4 with the 3" lift. I have a new pitman arm for the steering--one of these new angled ones. they only have two nuts, a smaller one for the steering rods and a larger one for steering box. the nut on the box side is 1"1/4 and is tighter than a gnats vagina. I thought it would be a bang-bang thing to swap out but someone told me that I need a special Pitman Arm Pulley Tool to get it done.
I had mine off once. I tried a regular pulley puller, but it kep't slipping off. I had to borrow a pittman arm puller from a friend. I don't think you'll get it off without one. You may be able to rent one at one of your local tool rental places instead of buying one.
You can usually borrow a Pitman arm puller from Autozone for a small returnable deposit, but it won't help get the Large Nut loose.
The best way to remove the large nut on the sector shaft is to use a 1/2" drive Air (pneumatic) Impact wrench. Ragging on it with a big wrench or a breaker bar can damage the seals & possibly other internals.
i have a 78 f-250 and had to replace the sector shaft seal once. i used my 1'2 breaker bar with a piece of pipe to lossen the nut and the used a large wrecking bar to pry down on it while my father-inlaw hit the pitman arm with a hammer. a few wacks with the addes preasure from the bar and it cam right off...
Another way to loosen the the pitman arm is to heat it with a Benzo torch - about 5 minutes will do. Of course, don't use an Oxy torch or you'll change the temper of the steel. A good pitman arm puller (with the side clamps to stop the jaws from spreading) will cost you about $50-70+, but there are some cheap Taiwanese pullers available for $12. I bought a couple at that price so I don't have to drive across town in murderous traffic on some friday afternoon to get a replacement when the cheapy breaks!
