Im looking at getting a diesel as a project truck, I plan on completely rebuilding the motor and basickly hot-rodding it. I would like to know some of the differences between the 1994.5-1997 and the 1999.5-2003 powerstrokes. I know the older ones were not intercolled but what else?
in the 94.5 - 99 then had a garret turbo that didnt have a wastegate, the 99-03 had a turbo (not sure if it was still a garret) with a wastegate. im not positve that there different but i dont know if they used the same size turbo with a wastegate.
they did something with the connecting rods also, like made out a different material.
as afr as i know, no psd ever had a wastegate (why on a diesel anyways?) and my 2006 is a garret, my 2004 was, so i assume that they used the garret the whole time.

The 99-2003 had a wastegate. A wastegate is needed do to the size of the fixed vane turbo to prevent a pressure imbalance. Without a wastegate an imbalance of drive pressure VS the amount of boost that the turbo makes and that pressure differential is very hard on the thrust bearing of the turbocharger itself, the WG helps vent that excess pressure as needed.
