Have a 1994 YardMan lawnmower with a Briggs and Stratton engine, has a six speed self propelled transmission. In the last six weeks at least three times the drive belt has slipped off and made the self propelled inoperable. I have dissasembled, reasembled, nothing appears to be out of order, works fine, then with no warning the drive belt slips off. I have searched for troubleshooting and wonder if the drive belt is stretched? This mower is in its 13th season, original drive belt went for about 9, then snapped abruptly. Any ideas? The engine runs well, cuts great, but as a push mower without the self proprelled is miserable, heavier and more difficult to push than a "walk behind mower". Any suggestions?
Either the belt is stretched, the engine or tranny mount bolts are loose, or the deck is cracked, allowing things to flex out of alignment.
Take a close look at the input of the tranny, and make sure you can't shake the pullley around too much in any direction. There should be an e-clip or snap ring under the pulley that does wear out after a bit, so it is possible the pulley is moving out of alignment.
It probably just the belt but check the idler it should be a bearing with a reducer bushing in the center I think its a 6203 or 6204.Sometimes when running it will lock up causing the belt to strech and fall off.when ever I change a belt on one of those I usually change that bearing just to be safe.
The Main Drive Belt Has A Couple Of Bolts Coming Down Near The Front Pulley To Keep It From Sliping Off When You Release The Tension By Raising The Blades.
