Smile Question on pyrometer gauge ?

Looking at Isspro gauge kit from Dieselmanor. They show 2 options for mounting thermocouple ,for pyrometer to exhaust manifold. they show a st steel clamp & using a drill & tap . The drill & tap method is the way to go right? Also they sell Spray paint( for plastic) to paint A pillar for $25 a can! Anyone used this paint, pricey stuff!

the drill and tap way is the best as for the paint my local parts house has the plastic paint for about $6 bucks. I would check local shop first.

Wink Well . . .

I would take the pod to a local body shop to match interior and paint. Painting plastic, especially those pieces that flex during install or use, is tricky. The blending they do to give it the flexibilty is key, IMO.

Drill and tap--passenger side exhaust manifold at cyl#7 (next to firewall) if you have enough wire and you can get to it. Paint is expensive, but you don't want a crappy looking job. However, IMHO, $25 is a little pricy and there are good interior paints available at your local suppliers for less.

Seems to be the one that nukes first, but not sure that it's from excessive EGT's, have a theory about something else (see the competition thread). Why not go to potentially the hottest spot first, or better yet--go with two pyro's to see the difference if there is one.

2 pyros is a novel idea... I may try that out.

The Edge people told me to put in in the Ex Manifold on the drivers side rear. So thats where it went.

listen.... drill and tap the manifold on the drivers side by the bend towards the rear of the engine, lots of room to work and it will work just fine !! as for the painting of the pillar, you will need to purchase a plastic adhesion promoter first, this will aid in the flexibilty for the final finish coat, a real simple job to do yourself...mine came out flawless!!

it adhered perfectly, my interior is grey so i know they carry this color but not sure of others and it turned out perfect not sure if it is intended for this type of plastic but it worked good. with a dull finish

Yes, the drivers side is quite "easy" to get to and it will work just fine as you stated. That's where mine happens to be. The point I was trying to make (and why I refered him to the competition thread, maybe I should have put a link) was that the right side of the motor seems to suffer carnage first, for whatever reason. Wouldn't you rather have the probe placed where the potential hottest spot is rather than just having it "work correctly"?

Lonewolftx:

Not to bust on you or anything but, it doesnt stand to reason that you would get an accurate reading of the EGT's by placing the probe anywhere but on the exhaust manifold directly where the exhaust is leaving the engine.

I have no idea what the difference in temp may be on the downpipe/manifold or anywhere further down the exhaust system but isn't the point of EGT readings to see how hot your exhaust temp is??

Again, not a bust on you... more of a question for everyone.

There are two schools of thought on the pyro probe placement. One is that you get a more "accurate" reading by going into the exhaust manifold, but the risk is the probe breaks off and goes through your turbine. The other is that with post turbo placement you don't risk probe damage to the impeller, but your temps are lower and you must compensate for the difference.

How many probes have "broken off" and went into the turbine? Does anyone know of any? Not hearsay, but does anyone really know? If so, what damage was done. Thanks.
