Check your fuses. I bet you find one blown, or open.
My '83 tach is dying, too. It works when it is cold, but when it heats up, it goes south. I suspect a bad connection inside, but want to get another one before I open up the one I have.
Checked fuses, no blown. When the tach started to die, the seat belt light and buzzer would come on and the tach would stop working and then bounce back on. Don't think the tach is bad since the lamp and buzzer went out too.
Check the printed circut on the cluster for damage or corosion.
Check the connector at the cluster for looseness.
Check the wiring harness around the cluster connector, and also check the wires going from the cluster connector to the seat belt warning buzzer and switch for damage.
This is of course assuming the problem happened at the same time, like you mentioned.
Ask yourself what do these two components have in common with each other? There are three things.
1: The Printed Circut Board
2: The Cluster Connector
3: The Wiring Harness.
Also, suspect the cab grounds, and instrument cluster grounds. There is one big one right beside the radio just above the ash tray, if my memory is right... Theres a cab ground to the engine right beside where the accelerator cable comes out of the firewall. Check it for corrosion. Dont mess with the printed circuit connections other than to gently rub the connection surfaces with a pencil eraser. The key is GENTLE.
i had the same problem but it was a blown fuse in the fuse box, the fuse that controls the tach, seat belt light and buzzer are on the same fuse in the fuse box labeled "warning lights" or something.
