I just bought a 90 f150 lariat with the big V8. It started whining when turning as well. I bought a$10 bottle of pump repair fluid and bam the noise was gone. It had two chambers with a brown liquid and a clear liquid. Just can't remember the name....got it from Autozone. Fixed my whining right away.
My 1994 F-150 XLT w/ the 5.8L has been whining since I bought it used in '95 and still does today with 167k miles. Mostly while maneuvering in and out of the driveway, or parking lot type scenarios in tight quarters. Can't hear it while rolling down the road if it dows. Tried all the magic potions off the shelf with no luck. Just got used to it and hasn't bothered me sense.
I would never put anything from GM in my fords! Good luck!
Thats too bad because it works soooooo much better. I'll put the Saginaw pump in every Ford I got. Even if its not whining I'll do it because it makes it so much easier to steer low pressure big tires.
I had a Saginaw pump on the 400 in my 78. It was the kind of pump that was on there from the 79 Lincoln that the engine came from, so I left it there. Well, after about a year it puked. Now I have a Ford pump on there that came from a 77 LTD with a 302. It is the quitest Ford pump I have ever had, and steers the 36" Iroks with no problem. Even though the Ford pumps may be a little noisier than a Saginaw I have never had one fail on me. Confirms my belief in GM products even more. The pump on my 95 has been whining like crazy for the last five years and still works fine. Maybe I will try changing the fluid to see if it will quiet down.
