I have salvaged the steering column and some other electrical components from a mid '80's Tempo for my '51 F-1. I would like to obtain a color-coded wiring diagram for the Tempo to assist wiring it to my truck. Does anyone know where I could locate this?
Your public library might be your best bet. They often have Haynes or Chilton manuals for popular vehicles, and it should have a wiring diagram with color codes.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 03:53 PM (EST)]Beave: I would be careful with newer wiring from a Tempo. You may want to purchase a new harness and rewire your 51 completely with the proper gauge wire for the six volt load. I am assuming you still run the original 6 volt positive ground.
I purchased a wiring harness for my F-3 1951 from Class Tech in Bend Or. 800-874-9981 or 541-389-6339 Chris Olsen helped me a great deal. Street adress is 62935 Layton ave. This was several years ago (6 ) but it was a first class, complete harness, and all the perhiphal wire needed for a complete rewire. No questions about wire size, gauge, lengths, etc. All color coded to original specs. Bullet connections. Also included schematics. Total cost was $280.00 US.
I highly recommend this route. Very clean and very reliable.
Good luck.
I guess I should have been more specific about what I have and what I am intending on doing. The truck has been updated to 12-volt system, very poorly I might add. No fuse block, no fuses, no connectors, just strip the ends of wires, twist them together and tape 'em up. I'm pretty much going to be starting from scratch. I was thinking that I could follow the schematic and colors of the donor Tempo items and not need to rewire the steering column, fuseblock, etc.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-02 AT 02:11 PM (EST)]Beave: It sounds as if you have a basket case on your hands. It may be prudent to rewire properly from the ground up. Try that guy who I gave you in yesterday's post and see if he has a harness for a 12 volt system. If not, I am sure you can get the 12 volt harness somewhere else.
I think it always best to start fresh when looking at a wiring disaster. Over the years, people do strange things just to keep a vehicle going. You need to correct those foolish things. Rather than jerry rigging right along with everyone else's ideas of wiring, it may be prudent to start from scratch. Then you will never have to do it again. It is worth considering.
If you move forward with the Tempo wiring, see if you can get the shop manual from Ford. There are Flea Market Dealers that sell them, but check this site for its availability first. Otherwise, go to a local bookstore, you will find a shop manual that may help you. If you are short on funds, head to the library, like ihc300 suggested.
